I just celebrated my 10yr anniversary this week and wanted to share with some of you who may be new to this crazy world were living in. It's not the end, when I found out I had Celiac I was 19 yrs old and thought my life was over how could I not eat and drink what my friends ate and drank. There was denial ( Or cheating) I found out very fast this was not the way i wanted to feel the rest of my life. I'm not very good at writing down my feelings so I will keep this short. My friends have been great in helping me cope with this disease and my only hope is that you all have the same. I'm 10 yrs in and I haven't givin up hope that one day food will no longer run my life, and if that day never comes.........then so be it I happy just to be able to share this.

p.s NO GRAIN NO PAIN ;)

Hi Jon, and welcome to our board. I've been gluten-free for ten months now, and wonder what it will be like in ten years. It's still hard, especially with all my other intolerances. I am glad you're doing well!

Congratulations! I'm 8 months in and still feeling like garbage. My denial wasn't bad enough to include cheating!!

I wish I would have known what was wrong with me at 19 instead of 36. It would have saved me a lot of grief and agony.

I wish i knew i was glutent intolerant ten years ago when i was 18...now i'm 28 and it's done some damage to me...but i'm a superstar so i'm sure i'll pull through, especially with meeting new people here.

Jon, Thanks for posting this. I am 4 years into the diet and the changes have been incredible. I hope you will stick around you could give a lot of encouragement to some of the newbies that are struggling and feeling like there is no end to the changes and the misery. Welcome to the boards. My DS will be living in the Rochester area after he finishes his studies in December, he is an older student so close to your age, maybe you can clue us in on 'celiac freindly' places and things that he can do. He is a big time motor head and pool player and often is at a loss when he moves someplace new. We live a hour away and he had been going to Hennrietta to shoot billiards but hasn't found much else he can do. He has been gluten-free for 3 years and CC worries keep him kind of isolated at times.

Jon-Happy to have you on board and congratulations on your ten years! That is amazing and I'm sure you will provide much needed encouragement to all. I was dx two years ago at age 23---my first thoughts were, No midnight pizza!!!!!!!!!

And yet, we have both managed to survive. :D

      I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

      Yarrow Pom works really well with the skin issues I found out.I had to stop so my doterra because dealing with medical celiac circus. I had shingles in Feb 2023. Prayers for healing

      More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.

      I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50.
