How Would You Go About This?

I give her so much credit she tries so hard to make me food. Everything is separate from hers I have brand new condiments that havent been used. I make my own salad dressing (easy and at least I dont have to worry about cc with it). I watched her prepare it. She scrubbed down the grill before my hamburgers went on it and cleaned it thoroughly. I cant imagine how but I still was glutened

The only thing I can think of is the potato salad which I have bought a hundred times just happen to have gluten in it. Nobody was allowed to touch the food till I filled my plate. She yelled at everyone to wait till I had enough before they touched it :o thank god it was just immediate family or else I would have felt like an idiot !

This is the second time, the first time I knew why afterwards when I didnt realize she used mayo that morning on a sandwich but this time I was just sure I wouldnt. Unfortunately its bad today still stomach upset after 24 hours when its usually gone by now.

I dont want to tell her, I feel bad because she will feel horrible for me getting glutened. I wont lie to her and be disrespectful by doing it if she asks if I felt alright but I dont think Im going to offer the info. She would flip because she knows I have seizures when I get glutened and I had two last night :(

I guess no question really just a vent :(

Thanks for reading ....

I'd blame the potato salad.

You said you grilled hamburgers? Was it over charcoal? Charcoal has gluten! Natural charcoal that is charred wood, does not. If you're going to cook over regular charcoal, use a piece of foil under your burger.

The same thing happened to me. My mom tries so hard not to gluten me. We made sure everything that was made was gluten free. I did, however, have a burger that was grilled. We only have a gas grill. I was glutened and glutened bad.

Ever since then I have been going there and cooking my burgers in a pan on the stove. No more getting sick. Even though my mom cleaned the grill with Easy Off oven cleaner and the grill was spotless. I still got sick.

We dont know what caused it, but the problem was solved.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks :)

It was a gas grill, its my sister and bil's grill. My mom did the cooking over there. I had no idea about charcoal but its a good thing I do now since most of my family use charcoal grills.

I suspect the potato salad might have had cc but I had such a bad reaction to it, I cant imagine it just being cc unless its became really bad the longer I have been on the diet.

I wonder also if my mom used the same washcloth to wash it off with that she cleaned it with and basically just put it back on the grill by doing it. I dont think Im eating anymore on someone else's grill.

Tonight so far its just the toots left over thank goodness! The bad side effects are mostly gone. I just feel like a pig now with every time I move I make a noise

Oh well at least my 2 1/2 year old thinks its hilarious ;)

I can really relate to this post. My mom is diabetic, and very understanding of my limits. She has gone out of her way to prepare food for me, and it makes her feel like she's helping. She's glutened me twice  I haven't told her though because I don't want to hurt her feelings. Although I think I should educate her a little more, and maybe it wont happen again. This whole thing is alot of learning what not to eat, and there is alot of it. I think at first mistakes are bound to be made, unfortunetly.

Julie Thanks :)

My mom took it really well, she just called not too long ago and asked if I had been glutened from the bbq. I told her the truth and that I suspected the potato salad. She had concerns with the grill too. She wasnt as confident and wants to make sure the next time it doesnt happen so Im going to cook it in a pan instead of on the grill. Moms, what would we do without them?

Everybody else is intimidated but them it seems like and at adult age (34 years old) she still sees me as her baby. I mentioned just bringing my own food and she said not to that she would find a way since I always cook for myself and never eat out. She wanted to give me a meal free of cooking :)

Jules tell your mom, since she goes out of her way I bet it would hurt her feelings more you not telling her and coming out way later. Especially since its hurting your body each time. I know it would me if it was my daughter and she didnt want to hurt my feelings.

My MIL glutened me once, while I was staying at their house. She tried really hard, so I took my drug cocktail, and clammed up. I really wish I would have told her, it would start the learning curve sooner.

Penguin I agree completely

I dont have that problem with my mil because you first have to care enough about your dil to not worry if she isnt eating a thing all day long  Yeah she would probably justify it by saying I needed to lose a little weight anyways even though she is bigger than me

A friend of ours is a fantastic person with a grill. He only cooks my food IN foil or ON foil because of cross contamination. He said no matter how well he cleans the grill that there would still be gluten below the grates that could splatter up and contaminate my food. The only grill I put things on directly is my grill. It has never had gluten on it and never will. It just is so much safer this way. People do try so hard and we don't want them to feel bad if I get sick.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
