Losing Hair

I have been seeing a lot more hair in the shower drain recently. I pull so much out just washing my hair. My stomach has not been feeling very good recently either as I have not been very careful about avoiding soy. Could this be causing my hair loss or should I be more concerned and see the doctor?

One of the ways I know for sure that I've been glutened is increased hair loss. If I don't get gluten it doesn't happen to me. I don't know if something else could cause it though.

Hair loss can be a symptom of thyroid distress. this doesn't necesarily have to be lowenough to show on a blood test. it can be within normal limits but what is called sub clinical meaning within normal limits but we still get symptoms of thyroid deficiency.

soy is linked with depressing the thyroid and for people who struggle with this alternative medicine recommends avoiding soy.

hair loss can also indicate deficiency in minerals, i think magnesium and calcium, but I'm uncertain. there, again can be within normal limits but either out of ratio to other minerals or low normal. I work with someone here who does muscle testing or kinesiology and when something like this comes up he checks it out and prescribes whatever i need. usually short in duration and sometimes i end up with a different symptom a month later, but at least the first one went away. I feel alot better with my thyroid level healthy. blood test confirmed it is at optimal level after kinesiology and food based standard process supplements

I hope this helps, lin

Hi I am the mom of a recently diagnosed 18 yr old daughter, who was diagnosed three weeks before going away to college. Talk about a crash course in celiac. Anyway, since July she has been losing hair pretty consistently. She's been on certain supplements -- via our naturopath -- and has only had a short respite from hair loss. Then she began getting diarrhea pretty consistently at school and our ND told her to stop the calcium/magnesium as it can cause diarrhea. I have researched so much on this topic and came across a thread about shampoo causing problems. Sure enough, she called me today and informed me that not only did her hair spray contain wheat, but her shampoo as well. I understand that she may have been ingesting her shampoo in the shower. Hopefully, her hair loss will ease up, as this is causing undue stress, on top of everything else she is dealing with. BTW, she also has Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and her TSH is ok right now, so her hair loss isn't related to this. Hope this helps

I have the same problem. Its not like its thinning, but alot of it comes out in the shower. I can just grab it all at the ends when its wet and rip out half a handful it seems. I don't know if its because its just long and thick or if it has to do with the celiac. Nothing worse than hair in the shower YUCK!! <_<

Me too. Exactly what you describe. I'm still undiagnosed but my 5yo is Celiac.

my twins lose a lot of hair. our vaccum is full of it, our drains are full of it, the floors, you name it. when i take clothes our of the dryer, i often have wound up balls of hair that come out. i talked to our ped gi about this. he told me that when someone has been sick, that their hair can miss an entire growth cycle----so after they start to get well, they will see a lot of hair loss. there is a name for it, but i don't know how to spell it.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
