Warning! Gm Cocoa Puffs Not gluten-free Any More!

I just called GM, and after being given the response, "always check the label" I insisted that the customer rep check to see if the current formula has wheat so that we could know once and for all. Upon checking, she returned to tell me that the current formula does contain wheat, and lists it on the label. I let her know how disappointed I am with the company and asked why they would make such a change. She had no answer, so I told her I suspected that it was for marketing, so they can tout their "whole grains" and sell it as a healthy choice. GEEZ!

I'm so mad!!

WEll the great thing about cocoa puffs was more of the snack factor then the breakfast factor. THey work great in a ziplog bag in a shopping cart/car seat/etc. Travel very well, and make almost no mess. Not the only food of course, but anyone that has a toddler can tell you how hard it is to get them to tyr noew foods!

I second that Vince !!! My son can't stand the new "Dora The Explorer Cinnamon stars" I thought I could distract him away from the Cocoa Puffs with those.....no luck. :(

I initially got an e-mail back from Kristi Goodman at GM stating they apologized and that they would send me a check to re-imburse me for the box of Cocoa Puffs that I had bought.

Today in the mail is my "check"....What they sent me was 2 coupons. One coupon is for one FREE general mills product the other coupon is for $1 off any general mills product.

It states on the coupons that I can use the coupons for any of the following:

Big G Cereal Products (yeah right)

Betty Crocker Products (have no clue about this one)

Bugles (yuck, just my opinion)

Chex Mix (HAHA)

Gold Medal Flour ( ARE YOU KIDDING ME???)

Nature Valley Granola (Try again)

Pop Secret (Not sure about this one either, I use orville reddenbacher 94% FF popcorn)

Does anyone know if there are any gluten-free products out there on this list??? Oh yeah, I can figure out the obvious ones on my own. HAHA!!

Hi Turtle :)

Betty Crocker makes Potato Buds--I use them to "bread" chicken, pork chops, etc. Nothing else jumps out at me...

I love your new picture--nice to see you dancing and having a good time

My dear Patti:

You ALWAYS come to my rescue....I think you were put on this earth to be my guardian angel or mentor or something of that nature! I really mean that.

Potato Buds is a great idea....thanks so much. I've never used them before so i'll have to check it out!

Glad you like my new pic. I think it looks like i'm dancin on a gluten-free waffle, what do you think???

I used the link to go to General Mills. I told them that I think they should do a search on the website and read the comments about their company. I have also been contacting the large cereal companies with my comments, since cereal is a staple to kids. I never get a real response just some prompted letter.

Is there any way to post a petition on the website for electronic signature to them be submitted to these companies?

It's tough enough being a kid, but my kid is a diabetic and has celiac disease.

Have a great day, Karen

I thought I'd mention that Whole Food's Cocoa Comets (like cocoa puffs) are gluten free. My son loves them. :)

The last time we went to the States we picked up a few boxes of Cocoa Pebbles. I was so excited that they were gluten-free. BUT when I actually ate them I had reactions. Of course, I tried to blame the soy milk the first try and then thought the next day, I thought it was something I ate for lunch. By the third try a week later, I narrowed it down to the Pebbles. Since then I will only eat organic gluten-free cereals from the specialty store for about 4x the price! So frustrating!

Safeway has their own brand of cocoa cereal that is gluten-free. I can't remember the name of it, but it comes in a large bag.

Yep. Cocoa Astros. My son seems to react to it though. I'm not too sure about Safeway's manufacturing processes. This is why I go out of my way to get the Whole Foods brands. Both are made around gluten, but we seem to have better luck with Whole Foods.

Get your total IGA checked to make sure your celiac antibody test scores are trustworthy.

I do eat 4 slices of wheat bread with almond butter. Yes it was a reference to my iron consumption.
    • trents
To give you a frame of reference for pretesting gluten consumption necessary to ensure valid antibody testing, here is the current recommendation for those who have been on a gluten free diet: The daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for at least two weeks. Not sure why you mentioned eggs and chicken. They are not sources of gluten. Was that in reference to dietary iron consumption?

Thanks for your insight. I've been eating wheat bread at least 5 times a week for several months. I've been eating chicken or eggs 5 days a week for at least a year.
