Trader Joe's - Do They Hide Gluten Or Chance Of Cc?

I was traveling and found a Trader Joe's. I know how many people rave about the store so I went in. I asked about gluten and I was told that they wouldn't hide gluten. I also bought something that told me what equipment shared with the product, so I felt they were letting us know what could be cross contaminated.

When I got home I went on their website and found their gluten-free list. The products I bought are not on it. The first product, chicken enchiladas in salsa verde is on the west coast gluten-free list, but I bought it in Massachusetts. Do you think it would be ok?

The second one, Roasted Vegetable Enchiladas, isn't on either list as gluten-free, but it says it is manufactured on equipment with soy, eggs, but not wheat or gluten. Does anyone know if this is ok?

I don't want to take a chance but my mouth waters every time I open the freezer.

My thought is they change products more often than they change their gluten-free list.

I have found a lot of good things that I can eat @ trader joes, it isnt a gluten free store but they do carry a lot of gluten free items.

I have experienced what I think was cross-contamination by eating items that appeared to be gluten-free from the ingredient listing but weren't on their gluten-free list (case in point: Hummus). However I agree that they just don't update their gluten-free list to keep up with their constantly revolving product line.

I agree that Trader Joe's lists are not up to date. I purchased items from the list ( didn't confirm the label) and found them not to be gluten-free the hard way. After later inspection I found the veggie chips were made on equipment shared with Wheat products. I learned my lesson. Always check the labels.

Trader joes readily admits that they can't keep their lists up to date. I purchased several things there that had not been on the list but did not list any suspicious ingredients. I asked the manager about it and he said that everything is properly labeled, so even if it isn't on the list it should be fine. I had no reactions to any of it, and the enchiladas was one of the items I bought.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
