gluten-free Resturants In Cape May Nj

I'd like to spend an overnight in Cape May, NJ for the fall migration this year, and wondered if anybody had any suggestions for a place to stay that accomodates gluten-free. A bed and breakfast would be lovely, otherwise I guess I'll just get a motel with a fridge and microwave and provide my own!

I can't help you with that, but I just went off on a flight of fancy thinking about your trip. Sounds wonderful!

I came across the following link a while back. I never used it but it might prove useful.

Open Original Shared Link

The one time I stayed in Cape May (a couple of years ago), I stayed at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel. Their restaurant was celiac-aware at that time. The room came with a frig and I packed breakfast and lunch food.

Post the results of your birding trip. It will be interesting to hear the results.

Good luck!

HI All

I think I saw someone do a post for this once but can't get past the '3 letter minimun' on this board???

Can anyone help me?

We'll actually be in West Cape May but anywhere would be ok. If anyone can find the link on here I'd be thrilled!

Thanks so much in advance..

One favor, if you happen while in Cape May eat gluten-free at "Two Mile Landing" (great fish place) please let me know...I've attempted to contact them in 2005 about gluten-free dining but didn't get a response.

Thanks

Debbie

I'm planning a visit there soon also. Have never been there before so I'm' no help. lol

I'm meeting some friends there so hopefully I will find out some info in the next few weeks.

Looking forward to the visit. Heard it is nice. LL

Lindalee--there is a place called Rio Station..I think outside of Cape may where we had a great gluten-free meal but it was just steak b/potato and salad with my dressing. they seemed to listen and care. It's pricey tho.

Two Mile Landing is near the bridge which connects Wildwood Crest (Diamond Beach) to Cape May (beach area). I never thought of googling them.....good idea. Two Mile is my husband's favorite restaurant down there. If I discover it can accomodate gluten-free then I am one step closer in getting him to go to the Crest on vacation next year.

I can help! I was just in Cape May 2 weeks ago...now I returned to colder weather, anyway. There is a small little cafe in Cape May called Belle Vida. It serves gluten-free rice pasta!!!!! I actually had chicken parm for the first time in 2 1/2 years. It was amazing. The prices are decent. Service was good, There is a website for this cafe so in you google Belle Vida it will come up and they have a menu posted. Also we ate at the Ugly Mug in the downtown Cape May shopping area, they do not have a gluten free menu but I ordered a cheese dog without the bun. They were amazing, even cooked my order seperate from the others. They don't have a website but I do highly give them a good rep.

Enjoy your visit to Cape may, I am a big lighthouse person so I go to climb every year. The Cape May lighthouse was my first lighthouse I ever visited. Feel free to PM me with any other questions. Have a safe trip.

Kristy , we've probably run into one another before and don't know it. How long ago were you living in Hillside and he in Union?

They tore down the old Foodtown in Union Center and are replacing it with a Super Stop & Shop. There's rumour that the Hillside pool will be closing due to lack of members. Kean College is getting larger and now it's Kean University and there are condos near it and a new hotel is being built.

The Bradless of course is gone and it's now a Lowe hardware & building supplies (like we don't have enough of these stores in Union).

What a riot!!

Hubby and I have been down to Cape May a couple of times and love it. We went there on our mini-moon...we got married during the school year so I couldn't take off. We're hoping to get down there at Christmas time one year; it's supposed to be beautiful. We've done a couple different B&Bs and have liked all but one. How accomodating are the resturants to dietary needs??

Thanks for the tips - I hope I get to use them! I was between jobs when I posted this so I was planning to go during the week to avoid crowds, but I'm starting a job next week and will only have the weekends left! Might be worth a try anyway, but I might not get there this year. But I'm definitely filing this info away.

Hi Judy,

I just came back from Cape May. There are alot of wonderful places to eat. The best and safest thing to do is to order Meat or Fish and a veggie.

We had gone to a place in Wildwood to eat an Irish Tavern I explained that I could not eat anything with wheat and everything seemed just fine. I ordered the fresh cornbeef with sweet mashed potatoes.

Well, when the waitress came with the meal I knew it wasnt what they said it was going to be. It was a coldcut cornbeef. Well, so much for that.......I had the mashed potatoes.

I have had such a problem when we eat out, I always end up having something wrong.

Cape May has alot of wonderful little shops .....we stopped in the Nut shop and got some nuts and they also had some dark chocolate which was great.

Hope you have a wonderful time....Take the Cape May Carriage ride there on Sunset Boulvard

We also ate at the Blue Water Grille on Atlantic Ave which is about 10 -15 minutes away. They were

very understanding and really tried to please.

Have fun and enjoy....

Look under Travel - I asked for Cape May restaurants for a birdwatching tip and there are suggestions there. Have a good trip! Post us what you find!

Judyin Philly Enthusiast

Hi

We just got home today. I finally found the thread on birding before we left and saw your resturant and today my chiro told me that have a gluten-free rice pasta and some cheese her son ate. will post later. did find some places and did the Ugle Mug on Washington Sq. There hambs are great. Still unpacking but thanks for your earlier 'birding' post. Patti sent it to me..thanks Patti.

If you are a birder (ANYONE WILL LOVE THIS)....you must do the SALT MARSH SAFARI...

It's a 2 hr ride on a boat with a tarp cover to stay dry and also out of sun...Bob and Linda were exceptional guides. Saw great birds and got one 'lifer' will have to look it up but it was a swamp shart tailed swallow I THINK..

thanks for all the suggestions before we went, Ipeller..didn't think to look for travel..

Judy,

I was to Cape May 2 weeks ago, I was to the Ugly Mug, very impressed. I also ate at Belle Vida after hearing they did the rice pasta. Did you go see the lighthouse? I just love Cape May. There were so many great shop at the Washington Street mall. My finace really wanted to go to the Haunted House which sits on your way out of the downtown area. They have a dinner thing, not exactly sure what it is but I know it has to do with ghosts/spirits. I just didn't see a whole lot I could eat and at 35 a pop for the deal I wasn't sure I was up to just picking at the food. Hope you enjoyed yourself.

Amanda

PS-being back in PA and our currently chilly weather makes you wish you were at the beach again, huh?

Hi Lindalee--It was great talking to you today. Jim is going to scan in the card and will mail map and card tomorrow.

Patti (thanks once again) joined the 2 threads for us. I was thinking of compileing a list and not sure but maybe as people go they can add to the list.

Maybe only the original poster can add..not sure.

thought we could start with this. I'd call the chamber of commerce and ask for brochures and the Cape May Map. It's great. ON the list the * indicates where the item is on the 2006-07 map.

2. Harbor View Restaurant-(G3) is the area on map. Shows building there but didn't see an add.

There is also a Harbor Side Deck Bar for sitting out side. Be sure to ck if it's open. B & L on Sat & Sun

can look out onto the water and watch boats go by. Delicious salad..Ken's ranch Had a beef filet but think the rub is what made me sick. They need some education but seemed willing. Chef was told nothing on steak but!!! We got there at 5:00 when they opened and were the only ones there. In 1/2 hr was full. advise to go early to spell out instructions.

3. The Ugly Mug (on the Washington Street Mall) Eaten there many many times. Have Wise chips with sandwich and dill pickel was wonderful. Had the hamb/w /l/t/o/ didn't eat chips and coke.

Also we ate at the Ugly Mug in the downtown Cape May shopping area, they do not have a gluten free menu but I ordered a cheese dog without the bun. They were amazing, even cooked my order seperate from the others. They don't have a website but I do highly give them a good rep.

Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
    • Scott Adams
That is interesting, and it's the first time I heard about the umbilical cord beings used for that test. Thanks for sharing!
    • knitty kitty
@lizzie42, You're being a good mom, seeking answers for your son.  Cheers! Subclinical thiamine deficiency commonly occurs with anemia.  An outright Thiamine deficiency can be precipitated by the consumption of a high carbohydrate meal.   Symptoms of Thiamine deficiency include feeling shakey or wobbly in the legs, muscle weakness or cramps, as well as aggression and irritability, confusion, mood swings and behavior changes.  Thiamine is essential to the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine which keep us calm and rational.   @Jsingh, histamine intolerance is also a symptom of Thiamine deficiency.  Thiamine is needed to prevent mast cells from releasing histamine at the slightest provocation as is seen in histamine intolerance.  Thiamine and the other B vitamins and Vitamin C are needed to clear histamine from the body.  Without sufficient thiamine and other B vitamins to clear it, the histamine builds up.  High histamine levels can change behavior, too.  High histamine levels are found in the brains of patients with schizophrenia.  Thiamine deficiency can also cause extreme hunger or conversely anorexia.   High carbohydrate meals can precipitate thiamine deficiency because additional thiamine is required to process carbohydrates for the body to use as fuel.  The more carbohydrates one eats daily, the more one needs additional thiamine above the RDA.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses. Keep in mind that gluten-free processed foods like cookies and such are not required to be fortified and enriched with vitamins and minerals like their gluten containing counterparts are.  Limit processed gluten-free foods.  They are often full of empty calories and unhealthy saturated fats and additives, and are high in histamine or histamine release triggers.  It's time you bought your own vitamins to supplement what is not being absorbed due to malabsorption of Celiac disease.  Benfotiamine is a form of Thiamine that has been shown to improve intestinal health as well as brain function. Do talk to your doctors and dieticians about supplementing with the essential vitamins and minerals while your children are growing up gluten free.  Serve nutritionally dense foods.  Meats and liver are great sources of B vitamins and minerals. Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!
