Brewer's Yeast

The Forbidden Food list on this site lists Brewer's Yeast. I checked the label of the brand I use (Lewis Labs) and it says "Gluten Free." Kal brand Nutritional Yeast says "No Gluten Added," which makes me think that they are acknowledging the possible presence of gluten, either from the product itself or from cross-contamination.

I'm wondering if the Forbidden List has in mind, however, not the Kal brand, but the Brewer's Yeast that is a by-product of the brewing process--that certainly

would have gluten--and not what one is most likely to find today in health food stores. It is confusing for manufacturers to call this yeast a brewer's yeast when it is usually made from sugar beets grown for this purpose. (I suppose they don't want to lose "brand recognition" built up over time with the other name.) I don't know how they are able to get around the "truth in labeling laws." There must be a grandfather loophole here that allows this to happen.

I guess my concern is that I would not like to give up this food supplement since it is very rich in B vitamins, and good quality protein, both of which are needed in abundance by CDers, according to several posters on this board. Being self-diagnosed, and only two months gluten-free, and without a doctor--the way I like it--I depend on this board in making my decisions on what to do in handling my condition. I know I'm responsible for these decisions and that no one else on this board is-- no matter how knowledgeable they are (and so many of you are). In short, I trust this board, that is, the sum of information contained here (more than

I would any doctor), believing that the give and take on this board, with the sharing of experiences, will show me, as I do my daily read (much better than doing my daily bread, especially if not gluten-free)) how best to deal with my own condition. I'm hopeful. The board, which means all of you, have already made a difference on how I am feeling. I know the improvements will continue. I am grateful to you all. --Aldo

Aldo,

I think you are right about the forbidden list referring to the brewer's yeast that is a by-product of the brewing industry. Primary-grown yeast (often called nutritional yeast) should be gluten-free unless a gluten-containing ingredient is added to the formulation. I personally use KAL brand yeasts, both fortified ("Vegetarian Support Formula"--for when I want lots of vitamins) and unfortified ("Imported"--for when I want lots of protein). I have not noticed any celiac disease-like reaction to them, although I will occasionally get a nasty but harmless hot flash from the large amount of niacin in the fortified yeast, if I get a little too much or if the mixture wasn't homogeneous enough (which of course, I can't tell by looking!).

My bet is that nutritional/brewer's yeast is considered a nutritional supplement, rather than a food, and so is unregulated and not subject to any "truth in labeling laws" at all! I think it's excellent stuff, though, for anyone who can tolerate dietary yeast.

I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better, and gratified that we all have been instrumental in bringing this about. May you continue to improve daily!

HI

I am brand new to all of this  and had some questions about the KAL nutritional yeast also. I started eating it and did not have a RXN. I called them anyway just to check on the product and they said that the yeast may or may not be processed through the same machine as a gluten containing product ... but that they take the machine apart and clean it so thoroughly that they guarantee that it is gluten free.

I don't know about this... I mean there is always room for human error with cleaning so I don't know what to trust...

what does anyone think??

Okay...

Now both my friend and I tried the Kal Nutritional yeast and both had adverse reactions... so I think that it is NOT gluten free :(

Has anyone had a reaction to the Lewis Labs kind?

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.
