Pregnant Diagnosed With Celiacs

Hello,

I am waiting for the test results but they are pretty sure I have celiacs. All three of my children were just diagnosed and I have the same symptoms as them. But I am 6 months pregnant. I know that it will ultimatley be better for my baby but I am nervous about losing weight and not gaining. Not that I really want to gain too much anyway. We went on a diet sort of like the gluten-free one a few years ago. I lost 75 lbs like it was butter melting off my body. So it just makes me a but nervous. Anyone else been through soemthing similar?

Thank you!!

Robin

Hi Robin,

This is a great place to post. YOu may also want to post in the weight issues section. Sorry I can't help you more, but someone here will. Good luck!

Were you 75 lbs. overwight when you lost that much, or was it way too much weight to lose? One of the things to keep in mind is that some people who have celiac gain weight precisely BECAUSE of their problems with gluten. Their bodies go into "famine" mode and pack on all the fat they can store because (as far as the body can tell) there just aren't enough nutrients available in the world! AAAAGGGHHH! In reality, it's just that your intestines are damaged so much that not enough nutrients can get through, but your body responds the same way.

So, if you went (esentially) gluten-free in the past, thus giving your intestines a chance to heal, it is possible that your body told itself: "Hey! Famine's over! Drop that fat you've been storing!", thus leading to the big loss of weight. As long as you were getting sufficient nutrients (eating healthy amounts of food and a good balance of food types) I don't think the weight loss was a bad thing, necessarily. And I doubt that (so long as you were eating healthily) you would have kept on losing until you looked like boy in the "Flat Stanley" book.

However, you are the one who knows the most about your situation. If the weight loss was a dangerous thing (if you were becoming way too skinny and couldn't seem to keep any weight on, no matter what you did) . . . then I can see how going on the gluten free diet would give you pause.

I think that (if I were you) I'd sit down with my OBGYN and have a nice long talk about your concerns and what happened in the past. At least you'll get another point of view.

Good luck!

Hi Robin,

I am in the same boat as you right now. My 2 year old daughter had somewhat + bloodwork and a biopsy yesterday and the GI thinks she does have celiac disease. My blood came back+ and after I deliver I will probably do the biopsy as well. I am 8 months pregnant and not sure if I should wait for biopsy or not. My dd and my problems are not the typical problems for celiac, we both suffer from chronic constipation and she did not gain any weight at her 2 year checkup and wasn't really eating either. I have battled IBS since I was a child and just thought typical IBS. I have also suffered from endometriosis, infertility, miscarriage and this stomach thing. Just thought I'd tell you we are kind of in the same boat. You can certainly PM me if would like. I would like to hear how your kids were diagnosed. If you want to go to the post "parents begging not to do biopsy" you can see a little bit of our story. Chat soon!

@Jmartes71, I went to Doterra's site and had a look around.  The Doterra TerraZyme supplement really jumped out at me.  Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients.  The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus!  Other enzymes are made by yeast Saccharomyces!  Considering the fact that Celiac often have permeable intestines (leaky gut syndrome), I would be very hesitant to take a product like this.  Although there may not be live black mold or yeast in the product, the enzymes may still cause an immune system response which would definitely cause inflammation throughout the body.   Skin, eyes, and intestines are all made from the same basic type of cells.  Your skin on the outside and eyes can reflect how irritated the intestines are on the inside.  Our skin, eyes, and intestines all need the same vitamins and nutrients to be healthy:  Vitamin A, Niacin B3 and Tryptophan, Riboflavin B2, Biotin B7, Vitamin C, and Omega Threes.  Remember that the eight B vitamins work together.  Just taking high doses of just one, vitamin like B12, can cause a deficiency in the others.  Taking high doses of B12 can mask a Folate B9 deficiency.  If you take B12, please take a B Complex, too.  Thiamine B1 can be taken in high doses safely without toxicity.  Thiamine is needed by itself to produce energy so every cell in the body can function, but Thiamine also works with the other B vitamins to make life sustaining enzymes and digestive enzymes.  Deficiencies in either Niacin, Vitamin C, or Thiamine can cause digestive problems resulting in Pellagra, Scurvy, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi.   If you change your diet, you will change your intestinal microbiome.  Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet, will starve out SIBO bacteria.  Thiamine keeps bacteria in check so they don't get out of control as in SIBO.  Thiamine also keeps MOLDS and Yeasts from overgrowth.   Menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities are symptomatic of low Vitamin D.   Doctors are not as knowledgeable about malnutrition as we need them to be.  A nutritionist or dietician would be more helpful.   Take control of your diet and nutrition.  Quit looking for a pill that's going to make you feel better overnight.  The Celiac journey is a marathon, not a sprint.   "Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food."

The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.
