Newspaper Article About My Daughter, Mollie

Hi everyone,

I haven't been on this board for a while but we've been busy! I wanted to share the article about my daughter, Mollie, who has celiac disease. Not only was this front page news in the Sunday, Nov. 19 edition of The Anderson Herald Bulletin (Indiana) but it has been picked up on the wire with the AP and has gone out to 2,800 newspapers across the country and another 1,500 today!!!! And it's still on the wire! Mollie feels very strongly about getting the word out about celiac disease in order to help others who may not even know they have it! We were fortunate and had a great family doc from Canada who was taught more about celiac disease than here in the USA. Please email me if you have seen this in your local paper! Enjoy!!!!!

Best,

Kim Guthrie, proud mom of Mollie

Leaving the disease behind

Kim Guthrie goes through several knives making toast for her family in

the morning. And she has to use two toasters. “I also have to use two

different tubs of butter,” she said.

That is the most wonderful article.........wow. I am so impressed by your family....and that the author took so much time to REALLY portray what it is like to be a Celiac. This just gave me chills.

:D Hugs to you and your family!!!!!!

Awesome!

I'm very surprised I didn't hear about this. My in-laws live in Anderson and I'm pretty sure they both get the paper.

Congrats on the article.

On a side note.........does anybody else see the ironic ad for the Santa's 10,000 cookie toss for Mounds mall

Hopefully they are tossing gluten free cookies :)

What a great idea having an article about kids dealing with celiac.

But, I read where Mollie eats Mc Donald's fries and I thought they had gluten ???

by the way...i sent this article out to all of my family and a bunch of my co-workers. They are all super supportive, but it was so nice to see an article about someone that I don't know, and they are JUST LIKE ME in terms of the cross contamination!!!!!!!!

You should share these comments with the journalist who wrote it!

Thanks so much for your imput! Yes, the McDonald's thing can be a problem but has not been for us (thankfully)! We happen to know the manager/owner of the McD that we go to here and it truly makes a difference. Besides that, thanks for emailing and sharing this article with friends, co-workers, and family! Mollie is just a kid......a NORMAL kid......that just has to eat differently to have good health! That is the way that we see it and NO OTHER WAY. I have gotten very close to the wonderful reporter, Lynelle Miller, who cared enough to put this article on hold for two weeks in order to get it ALL CORRECT. She is truly a wonderful young woman who cares about what she is doing and who she writes about. I hope that she gets credit for her hard work! I am sharing with her alot of comments and emails i get, along with her sending me emails that she has gotten from all over the country! It is truly wonderful to hear (for all of us) the impact and thankfulness that folks have sent! I guess Mollie's goal is getting accomplished after all!

Best,

Kim

Great article. Did you get your diagnosis by dietary response, or did she (Mollie) end up having a biopsy? Great article again, loved it. Maybe now doctors will educate themselves!

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
