Angry & Anxious When Starting Gluten Free Diet

Hi there,

I am new to all this and I have posted a couple of questions on the coping w/

celiac disease forum. Anyway-I gotta another question....

Did anyone feel extremely moody when first starting the gluten free diet???

I feel like I am going to go nuts and my stomach has been nauseous since starting this.

Though the nausea has let up today.

I am at the beginning of day four of being gluten free.

If these symptoms are attributed to "detoxing gluten"-I am absolutely shocked!!!!

This is crazy. Could I be going through withdrawals of wheat bread????????

J.

Absolutely you could be experiencing withdrawals, I remember it VIVIDLY... I remember calling my mom in tears saying it felt worse than withdrawals from drugs (yeah, been there)... It was awful, but it passed fairly quickly, just keep your body nourished and hydrated and try to rest as much as you can. Gluten affects the opioid receptors just like narcotics do, interesting huh? Just hang in there and keep it up, you will get through this and feel so much better for it.

Yes -- the moodiness is something many of us have experienced -- I wish I'd known that at the time since my withdrawal-based moodiness had something to do with the utter implosion of my relationship after my diagnosis. It will pass, however, so just hang in there and remember that you may be overreacting to things for a while.

For anyone who's been wondering, by the way, that relationship is definitively over -- which really has nothing to do with my illness, as I've recently discovered. I did my best to take responsibility for the ways in which my health might have complicated matters between us, but it turns out we needed more than one person giving it their best shot to make it work.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I have been gluten-free for one week and I have had a migrane, been realy tired and crabby. I have a hard time coping with my normal busy schedule, work 1/2 time,, 3 kids under 6, the housework and feeding everyone (2 gluten-free and 3 not gluten-free). I'm hoping I will feel better soon and pull myself together! I'm so used to being the rock of the family it has been hard! I feel guilty about not having the enery to play with my kids!

Sometimes rocks need to be pampered as well -- don't be too hard on yourself -- you'll be a much better rock when you're feeling healthy and relaxed!

Thank you for this insight. I have had rectal bleeding after glutening and subsequent constipation (+ IBS-C) and always attributed it to internal hemorrhoids (diagnosed). What I wasn't aware of is the possibility of bleeding further up the digestive tract. Please can you elaborate on the causes and symptoms to watch for?

Be sure to be eating gluten daily until all of your celiac disease tests are completed (at least 2 slices worth of wheat bread per day for at least 6-8 weeks before any blood tests, and 2 weeks before an endoscopy).

@maylynn, No, I took over the counter thiamine supplements, thiamine hydrochloride, Benfotiamine, and TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide).  My doctors were not very knowledgeable about nutrition and vitamins, and they missed my symptoms being connected to vitamin deficiencies.  I studied nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology because I wanted to know what vitamins were doing inside the body.  My doctors just prescribed pharmaceuticals to cover the symptoms of poor health due to malabsorption of nutrients. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, physically active, emotionally stressed and work outside in hot weather.  Thiamine works in concert with the other B vitamins, so all should be supplemented together.  Vitamin D needs to be activated by thiamine.  Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system.   Don't take Thiamine Mononitrate because it is not bioavailable.  The body has difficulty absorbing and utilizing it.   Do keep us posted on your progress!

@knitty kitty Did they give you medication for the Thiamine? I have never heard of that and have never related to symptoms more. My energy is always SO low. Zero drive to get anything done or work out. I used to love being on the go and being active. I am heading to the doctor next week so I will make sure to bring this up! Thank you so much!

@trents I have had another scope done since being diagnosed. The only thing they told me at that time was my body seems to be healing very well and to continue what I was doing. At that time, I had only been diagnosed 2 years so it may be a possibility that it was healing then but not now maybe. I think you're right that it's about time one was done! I will be bringing that up to my doctor at my apt. next week. Thank you for the suggestions with food. I have tried diary so far. Seems to not be the issue (luckily!). Will have to try the others!
