My Boss Just Made My Day!

Every year our company goes out for a Christmas lunch. During this past year I was diagnosed as gluten/casein intolerant. My boss has seen what I've gone through as far as being so sick for the past few years and losing a lot of weight. He often asks me how I am feeling and if the diet is helping. Anyway, this year instead of going out to a restaurant, they have decided to have the company lunch here and are going to order in from a different restaurant that has safe food (I eat at this restaurant all the time). Isn't that sooo thoughtful? It really made my day! :)

Marlene,

He should make Boss of the Year! We had our celiac holiday party Friday night and one of the door prizes was this great gift basket from glutenfreegifts.com. They have several ready made baskets (including one for celiac kids!) and you can have a basket made-to-order. Compared to other gift baskets I've seen, they are inexpensive.

Happy holidays!

Our xmas party was a cooking class. I announced that I would show up, but wouldn't eat or cook. They changed the menu so that everything was gluten free except for the dessert and the bread. The place the class was at even went and bought gluten-free chicken broth for the rissotto. It was so cool, especially since I've only been working here a month.

Isn't it nice when people we work with are considerate. It means so much.

Yes, it is wonderful to get this type of support at work! Especially since I don't get it from my family. My own family - husband and kids are great. I'm talking about siblings and parents. My sister recently had a get-together. I was in a huge hurry and forgot to take anything gluten free with me. There was not one thing there that I could eat and she put on quite a spread - snacks, desserts, etc. On the one hand I know I should never expect anything from anyone because that way I won't be disappointed, but, come on! I thought at least my sister would think of me. Even if she would have had a fruit tray. So the rest of the family (there's 50 of us all together) sat there and ate and talked and laughed. At one point my sister said to me "Aren't you going to have anything to eat?" I just couldn't wait to get out of there and go home :( I've learned my lesson. I will always take food with me -- no matter what.

Dear Marlene,

It is so great your boss is so considerate! As I see, your family is as inconsiderate as mine. No one understands this unless they have to worry about it all of the time! It sucks. I am so tired of worrying about every little thing. It is like being paranoid. But, it is either that, or get violently ill. Which would most normal people pick? My problem is, I cannot go out for very long because I have to eat at regular intervals. This is difficult, because I cannot afford to get those Glutino bars very often. I love those things! They are really expensive, though. Portable options are kind of hard to come by on this diet. I get low blood sugar, and need to have something immediately.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

How wonderful. I want to work with you!!! :D

I opted out of the Christmas lunch this year. No one even blinked. I told them I didn't want to go someplace where I couldn't eat the food. Didn't occur to them to go where I could. It is a small office (5 people). I'm disappointed in them. :(

A lot of people erroneously think soy is a problem for people needing to be on a gluten-free diet. Trents' comment above speaks to some celiacs also having a sensitivity to soy, but this is just some of them.  However, soy sauce is something anyone following a gluten-free diet should be wary of. Many soy sauces contain wheat, which is where the soy/gluten confusion comes into play. There is gluten-free soy sauce available, just read labels to be sure. I use San-J Tamari, which is gluten-free but does contain soy, in place of regular soy sauce.

I have many of those same CMP irregularities from time to time, with the exception that my potassium is always normal. What I can tell you is that it is normal for everything not to be normal when you get a CMP done. I used to get a CBC and CMP done annually and there were always some things out of spec. Docs don't get excited about it for the most part. It depends on the particular parameter (some are more important than others) and it depends on how far out of range it is. Docs also look for trends over time as opposed to isolated snapshots of this or that being out of spec at any given time. Our body chemistry is a dynamic entity.

Not sure what you mean by "soy being like gluten". Soy does not cause a celiac reaction. However, soy is one of the foods that many celiacs don't tolerate well for other reasons. Eggs, corn and dairy are also on that list of foods that many of those with celiac disease seem to be sensitive to. But that doesn't mean that all celiacs are sensitive to any one of them or all of them. It just means it's common. You may not have a problem with soy at all. Celiac disease is not a food allergy. It is an autoimmune response to the ingestion of gluten that creates inflammation in the small bowel lining that, over time, damages that lining.
