I keep hearing all these great stories about how all your kids are gaining weight and doind awesome. But Nicole has been on the diet now for 5 months and she did gain a little weight but she lost it again. She got up to 30 lbs but now she is 28.5. I know she is totally gluten free because I am with her all day. And look at every label. Any ideas?

Thanks for any advice

Celina

Some children don't need to gain any weight. Is she underweight? She looks very healthy in your avatar.

Does she still play with Play-Doh?

Do you still give her dairy? Or soy? Those could be big problems, too.

Within the first six months, Ty went from 33 to 39lbs where he has remained for the last 8 months. He is 7 years old and weighs 39-40lbs. He is in about the 5th percentile on the growth chart. He has gotten taller, and other people mention that he has "filled out" and has more energy. We check labels diligently and have never knowingly given him gluten since the day he was diagnosed. He is/was asymptomatic, so I'm not sure if we'd know if he got any anyhow.

We have a follow-up in March with the pediatric GI doc, and I hope that he will let us know if we're on the right track or not. I think I just make skinny boys. My other son does not have celiac. He's 9 and about 50-52lbs. I was happy to see that on his hockey team he is one of 5 puny, undersized 9 year olds. :P

The play-doh, dairy and soy are all good points. Do you have a follow up scheduled soon to talk with your doctor about this? I don't remember if you self diagnosed or not.

She did show a milk allergy so she is on soy milk and doing good with that. She used to be around the 90 % now shis is hovering around the 30%. She just looks pretty skinny.

My son is in the 5th percentile for his weight as well......he is not a celiac! (we have had him tested sooooo many times) He is almost 8 and only weighs in about 42lbs. We do add "beefy milk" to his diet, this was recommended by his Dr. - since he has been drinking this (about 2 months) he has gained almost 4 pounds.

Beefy Milk

6 oz Milk

1pkt of Carnation instant breakfast

1oz corn syrup

1oz corn oil

Sometimes we will throw a bananna in there too!

We do this every morning with his breakfast, we call it his morning milk shake!

I'd probably take her back in if she still can't gain and keep the weight on. Maybe there's an underlying other issue.

Our daughter was dx on 10/31/06. She's been gluten-free since that day and has gained 3lbs and grew 1/2 inch in that time. The dr's were thrilled with her progress. We go back in 6 months for followup again.

Good luck and hope she can start keeping some weight on.

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
