I spent days online emailing and calling the well known makeup manufacturers about gluten and cross contamination.

Several of them said no gluten but then when you asked about cross contamination they get real squirrly. Since most of the manufacturers were not responding well or at all I thought maybe the bigger chains who buy from them would get a better and quicker response. (Ok I admit I shop at Walgreens and I am very frugal but hey they have lots of stuff and promotional items too and well stocked and I can usually talk with this gal there who has always been helpful when I go there).

I talked to a Judy at Walgreens Corporate office 1-800-925-4733 she nornally finds out about gluten in their drugs but she said I was the first one to call them about makeup. It had never occurred to them that makeup could be a problem.

I have to tell you that she was very responsive and she is having her buyers call the makeup manufacturers to get information about gluten. She is getting better responses than I got for some.

I guess Jane Cosmetics per Karen Gears of Jane said all their makeup is gluten free and there is no possibility of cross contamination but if you look on their website which is pretty meager you won't find it. Nor any phone numbers. I emailed them but no response. So here is a company that is not marketing to it's full potential.

Also Wet and Wild was all gluten free except their mega wink mascara per Judy at Walgreens.

I think we need to ask Judy for a written list when she is finished. Call her.

I am awaiting an email from Judy when she finds out more. Be my guest and call her and encourage her and her buyers to find out and to get it in writting from the manufacturers the gluten free/no cross contamination products. 1-800-925-4733.

The following companies I have cross off my list of companies I would buy from either because of their responses which either said their products had gluten in them or they could not guarantee me their products had no cross contamination or they just flat out don't respond or didn't follow up with information they said they would provide me. If they do follow through I will put an update.

Although, not all the products that you listed contain gluten. All flavors of Crest are gluten free according the the 2006 Delphi Forum Product list. I would like to check on some of the others.

In order for you to really appreciate why I will not buy another Crest product you need to read my Proctor and Gamble post who are the folks who make Crest. Have you ever called them or emailed them? I did and you can see their response here:

I hadn't been sure how to bring up this topic but here goes. I am on Guaifenesin therapy for Fibromyalgia. In order for the Guai to properly work, I must avoid ALL Salicylates in makeup and anything put topically on my body. There are two com-

panies that make products just for us. Please note, that I have no financial gain in recommending either company.....I just use both of their products and find them to be very helpful and concerned for their buyer's health welfare. It was hard enough to find Salicylate free stuff before I added the gluten free into the mix! These are both web companies but if you are not com-

fortable (like me!) buying online, you can call their tollfree # and place your order. Also, if you have no credit card, you can place the order over the phone, send your check in and they will send you your order once the check clears. Lotsa options. The first company www.andrearose.com was started by a woman Andrea Rose, who is following the same therapy for Fibro. She started out with toothpaste, lipsticks and basic facial cleansers and then branched out. After getting poisoned last week by Maybelline concealer (they have not answered bk on my email), I called up her tollfree # and left a msg regarding the gluten content of their products. Andrea called me bk within 1/2 hour and not only assured me that ALL of their products are gluten free but she also spent about an 1/2 hour updating me on the latest research regarding our Fibro therapy. I have used the lipsticks (long lasting but not alot of colour options), toothpaste (sorry no mint!) and facial cleansers and found them all to be

excellent products. The other company is Cleure at www.cleure.com, formerly known as Grace Advantage. This company was started by a dentist who realized that it was almost impossible to find Salicylate free toothpaste. Other than that, I don't know how she got started. The company has really grown in the last few years and they now offer all makeup, cleansers, as well as the original toothpaste and dental products. Their toothpaste (cinnamon) is the only one I've been using now for several years. Just like it the best. I've also used their lipsticks (not long wearing) and their mineral pressed powder makeup and love them all. I have not tried the other products........yet. I called this company last week as well and they assured me that all of their products are gluten free as well. In the past, I have preferred to buy my makeup at a regular store, cuz I don't have to think about it ahead of time to remember to order and such but now that I have to be gluten free all the time too, I am intending to start ordering most or all of my products from both companies because frankly after 7 years of reading makeup labels and having to recognise all of the extended chemical names, I've HAD IT, now that I have to find out what is gluten free too. The makeup companies I've emailed, written or called have not been helpful and tell me that base doesn't have to be gluten free since you don't ingest it but come on folks, how many women don't get makeup base anywhere near their lips? or nose or eyes?

Sorry that this got so long but I thought that their might be some folks who would like this option of these products. Shoot, maybe I SHOULD start selling them! Just one note......they are not cheap......I'd say they are between the drugstore prices and the pricer dept store prices but they are quality products and peace of mind is priceless. And also, they do not have any mint toothpastes....mint is a Salicylate. But.......the neat thing about their toothpaste (both of them)......have you ever brushed you teeth and then wanted to eat something and it was like yuck? Well, these don't do that. And the Cleure (formerly Grace....they just changed their name it appears) toothpaste apparently is very highly rated by dental groups that rate these things. I think it does a better job on my teeth than Crest, says this former Crest-only Girl.

I certainly understand your reluctance to use these products. I don't think that I have ever received as response from a company that requested a doctor to pursue the inquiry. I can see my doctors face as I ask him to call or write to a company to see if a product was safe for me. That is totally absurd.

I do think that if you break the products down and ask for specific product information, you will get a more detail response. And certainly, more satisfactory.

I know that Neutrogena has certain products that are gluten free and confident that Crest is a non issue for celiac. Loreal Shampoo is also gluten free.

I have found that specific product information works well for me.

Thank you in you effort in contacting P&G. I am sure it took quite some time.

I wouldn't necessarily avoid the companies on this list. I can see some companies not responding, or being hesitant to provide lists of all of their gluten-free products. It may be a better practice to enquire about specific items...I think you would likely get a better response.

I have contacted Clinque, for example, (regarding certain chemical additives in makeup to which I'm allergic) and they said they would be happy to give me detailed ingredient information on any specific item. At this point, in Canada, many makeup products do not list ingredients, so the only way to find out this information is to place a call or email enquiry (that will change once the new labelling laws are completely in effect.) The same should go for enquiring about gluten.

I myself called on the Colgate toothpaste that I buy (Fresh Confidence with whiting), and the woman that I talked to said that it was Gluten free. That is the only one I use, they also said to call anytime, on any product. They even sent me coupons. ;)

Colgate/ Palmolive toll free # is 1-800-468-6502 So far I have had really great information on things when I called.

Tomorrow I am going to call Maybeline and talk to them because I only use there mascara in the pink or pink and green bottles.

I also called the company # on my Deodorant (LADY SPEED STICK) also made by Colgate/ palmolive and they also told me no gluten.

I guess I have been lucky so far everyone I have called ( that I remember) has always been very helpful to myself.

I know that my doctor had told me that i would have to call alll manufacturers to find out the information that I want. She would probably not write a company on there products. Those people are not very helpful. You could call back and ask to speak to someone higher up and tell them what has happened. :angry:

You may also be interested in this website: (Open Original Shared Link). You can also google EWG Report if the link doesn't work. It has information on the chemicals that are in all sorts of products. It tells you which ones are safer for the environment and some that even cause cancer. It doesn't have so much if you just search gluten free, but if you search wheat it will list the names of different words they use that mean wheat. Wendy

Clinque over the phone told me that they couldn't guarantee against cross contamination on their liquid makeup. That was specific enough for me. For me that is enough to put them on this list.

I find that it is easy to ask if it is gluten free but you really need to find out about cross contamination to make sure it truly is free of gluten. I either emailed or called all the above companies and ask them first if they have a list of their gluten free products and if they can guarantee there is no cross contamination and to provide it in writting.

I have had many good appropriate responses from other manufacturers that make the companies on this list look pretty bad. If you have a choice wouldn't you want to send your business to a company that is responsive and gives good disclosure and will stand behind their statements? The ones above have not show to be that sort yet.

I do not think it is asking too much for a list of products that a manufacturer makes that is gluten free. If I called on every liquid makeup I would like to try and gave a UPC I would have no life at all trying to track that sort of thing. It is much easier to ask the companies for a list and then go out and track down the stuff you can use and see if it looks good on me. This is chance for them to cross sell me lots of gluten free stuff if they were smart.

The good companies are prepared and "get it". The ones that don't care are obvious they don't have the lists nor do they really want to be bothered with it all or they give you half truths like yes it is gluten free but we don't guarantee it and we won't put it in writting. I guess what really burns me that they even say something is gluten free when there is a real chance there is cross contamination present and there is no disclaimer to that unless I ask about it.

I put this list out there so others don't have to waste their time like I have. I have also provided info on great responses I have had and I share those as well. It is just so dang ridiculous what we have to go through to get good disclosure on stuff.

I don't know that we can expect all companies to have a prepared gluten free list, especially when we're talking about personal products rather than food. And they certainly aren't going to go out of their way to prepare a list for one customer. Perhaps if more people are calling about the issue, then they will change the practice, but I don't see it as being practical, profit wise, to go through the hassle.

Also, ingredients from suppliers can change from time to time, so a prepared list may be impossible to keep (If I recall correctly, that is one reason that Kraft Canada no longer maintains a gluten free list online, and suggests customers check ingredients on individual products.) That would be one good reason to request that a customer call about a specific product in question. Laws to ensure proper labelling/disclosure of all ingredients is an important measure as well, and should make clear any potential source of gluten.

Personally, gluten isn't my only concern with personal products...I have to look for a number of chemicals as well, that are known by more than one name. It's also helpful if a company includes ingredients that may be added, depending on the ingredients they get from their source suppliers. Maybelline Great Lash mascara, for example, has a list of ingredients that states "may also include ______." Unfortunately for me, that "may also include" line is one ingredient I must avoid, so, regardless of whether it is actually in that product or not, I have to avoid it. At least I know and can make a decision. In the meantime, if I don't know what is in a product, then I don't use it.

Now, Clinque said that they cannot guarantee CC with their liquid makeup. Did they say that for all their products, or just that one? I don't, and never have, used their liquid makeup so I wouldn't avoid that company for that reason. I haven't checked on their powdered makeup yet, but they did say that they will answer any questions about specific products. I think it is fair for a company to offer that level of customer service.

I'm very sensitive but I don't worry about cc in products. I've always used Neutogena, Revlon, L'Oreal and Bare Escentuals UNLESS of course gluten is an ingredient. I've noticed a huge difference in cosmetic labeling in the two years I've been gluten-free. Labels used to say things like: vegetable based oil. Now they give you (most places anyway) the origin of the oil. I've also noticed a lot of products don't use wheat germ oil anymore and have switched to shea butter, jojoba or almond.

I would NEVER NEVER NEVER use a body products that had gluten in it, but I don't worry too much about CC.

I know Neutrogena has always said that they would clearly identify any gluten in their products.

Of course, CC in food is a different story. Just my opinion. :rolleyes:

I can vouch for one of the companies on your list -- Everyday Minerals is awesome!

I started using Everyday Minerals after desperately trying to find makeup without gluten OR soy. They were very responsive and confirmed that all their products were "clean" -- and it's pretty easy to check their labels as they have so few ingredients! They also made a point of advising me that one product, their original Finishing Dust, contained corn just in case that might be a concern for me. AND, because they are very responsive to customer concerns, they have since added another finishing powder to their line that is corn free...now that's customer service!

Everyday Minerals is an awesome company that is very customer oriented and they produce a quality product for a good price. I have now been using their products (which I love, in case you couldn't tell :P) for several months with no problems!

tHANK YOU i HAVEN'T HAD PROBLEMS WITH MAYBELINE, BUT THANK YOU FOR THE INFO, IAGREE WITH YOU ON THE CC WITH MAKE UP I ALSO USE MAYBELINE FOUNDATION INSTANT REWIND NOW.

BECAUSE THE MORE EXPENSIVE STUFF REVLON HAD WHEAT PROTIEN WHICH I USED TO USE.

NOW I JUST NEED TO FIND A GOOD BLUSH, I REALLY HAVEN'T HAD TROUBLE WITH EYE SHADOW

I USE ALL KINDS AND JUST READ LABELS GOOD OR CALL :ph34r:

ALL GOOD INFO THOUGH AND i DID MENTION CONCERN WITH THE MASCARA SO THANKS AGAIN :rolleyes:

Update: I have heard back from Jane & Co. and they are saying all their makeup is gluten free and no cross contamination which puts it up there with Bonnie Bell. Here is the email I just received from them:

      @NanceK, I do have Hypersensitivity Type Four reaction to Sulfa drugs, a sulfa allergy.  Benfotiamine and other forms of Thiamine do not bother me at all.  There's sulfur in all kinds of Thiamine, yet our bodies must have it as an essential nutrient to make life sustaining enzymes.  The sulfur in thiamine is in a ring which does not trigger sulfa allergy like sulfites in a chain found in pharmaceuticals.  Doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition (nor chemistry in this case).  I studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I wanted to know what vitamins were doing inside the body.   Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Not feeling well after starting Benfotiamine is normal.  It's called the "thiamine paradox" and is equivalent to an engine backfiring if it's not been cranked up for a while.  Mine went away in about three days.  I took a B Complex, magnesium and added molybdenum for a few weeks. It's important to add a B Complex with all eight essential B vitamins. Supplementing just one B vitamin can cause lows in some of the others and result in feeling worse, too.  Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of all the B vitamins, not just thiamine.  You need all eight.  Thiamine forms including Benfotiamine interact with each of the other B vitamins in some way.  It's important to add a magnesium glycinate or chelate supplement as well.  Forms of Thiamine including Benfotiamine need magnesium to make those life sustaining enzymes.  (Don't use magnesium oxide.  It's not absorbed well.  It pulls water into the intestines and is used to relieve constipation.)   Molybdenum is a trace mineral that helps the body utilize forms of Thiamine.   Molybdenum supplements are available over the counter.  It's not unusual to be low in molybdenum if low in thiamine.   I do hope you will add the necessary supplements and try Benfotiamine again.       Your goal is not to be a good puppet, there is no gain in that. You might want to restart the ones that helped.  It sounds more like you are suffering from malnutrition.  Gluten free foods are not fortified with things like Thiamine (B1), vitamin D, Iodine, B1,2,3,5,6 and 12 as non-gluten free products are required to be. There is a Catch-22 here.  Malnutrition can cause SIBO, and SIBO can worsen malnutrition. Another possibility is side effects from any medication that are taking.  I was on Metformin 3 months before it turned me into a zombi.  I had crippling side effects from most of the BP meds tried on me, and Losartan has many of the side effects on me from my pre gluten free days. Because you have been gluten free, you can test and talk until you are blue in the face but all of your tests will be negative.  Without gluten, you will not create the antigen against gluten, no antigens to gluten, so no small intestine damage from the antigens.  You will need to do a gluten challange to test positive if you need an official diagnosis, and even then, no guaranty: 10 g of gluten per day for 6 weeks! Then a full panel of Celiac tests and biopsy. At a minimum consider vitamin D, Liquid Iodine (unless you have dermatitis herpetiformis and iodine exasperates the rash), and Liquid Geritol. Push for vitamin D testing and a consult with a nutritionist experienced with Celiack Disease.  Most blood tests don't indicate nutritional deficiencies.  Your thyroid tests can be perfect, yet not indicate iodine deficiency for example.  Thiamine   test fine, but not pick up on beriberi.  Vegans are often B12 deficient because meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy are the primary souces of B12. Here is what I take daily.  10,000 IU vitamin D3 750 mg g a b a [   ] 200 mg CoQ10 [   ] 100 mg DHEA [   ] 250 mg thiamine B1 [   ] 100 mg of B2 [   ] 500 mg B5 pantothenic acid [   ] 100 mg B6 [   ] 1000 micrograms B12 n [   ] 500 mg vitamin c [   ] 500 mg taurine [   ] 200 mg selenium

      Hi…Just a note that if you have an allergy to sulfa it’s best not to take Benfotiamine. I bought a bottle and tried one without looking into it first and didn’t feel well.  I checked with my pharmacist and he said not to take it with a known sulfa allergy. I was really bummed because I thought it would help my energy level, but I was thankful I was given this info before taking more of it.

      Hello @Scatterbrain, Are you getting enough vitamins and minerals.  Gluten free food is not fortified so you may be starting to run low on B vitamins and vitamin D.   By the way you should get your mom checked for celiac disease.  You got it from your mom or dad.  Some studies show that following a gluten-free diet can stabilize or improve symptoms of dementia.  I know that for the 63 years I was eating gluten I got dumber and dumber until I started GFD and vitamin replenishment and it began to reverse.  Thiamine can get used up in a week or two.  Symptoms can come and go with daily diet.  Symptoms of beriberi due to Thiamine deficiency.   Difficulty walking. Loss of feeling (sensation) in hands and feet. Loss of muscle function or paralysis of the lower legs. Mental confusion. Pain. Speech difficulties. Strange eye movements (nystagmus) Tingling. Any change in medications? Last March I had corotid artery surgery (90 % blockage), and I started taking Losartan for blood pressure, added to the Clonidine I was taking already.  I was not recovering well and many of my pre gluten free symptoms were back  I was getting worse.  At first I thought it was caused a reaction to the anesthesia from the surgery, but that should have improved after two weeks.  Doctor thought I was just being a wimp. After three months I talked to my doctor about a break from the Losartan to see if it was causing it. It had not made any difference in my bp.  Except for clonindine, all of the previous bp meds tried had not worked to lower bp and had crippling side effects. One, I could not stand up straight; one wobbly knees, another spayed feet.  Inguinal hernia from the Lisinopril cough.  Had I contiued on those, I was destined for a wheelchair or walker. She said the symptoms were not from Losartan so I continued taking it.  Two weeks later I did not have the strength in hips and thighs to get up from sitting on the floor (Help, I can't get up😨).  I stopped AMA (not recommended).  Without the Losartan, a) bp did not change, after the 72 hour withdrawal from Losartanon, on clonidine only and b) symptoms started going away.  Improvement started in 72 hours.  After six weeks they were gone and I am getting better.

      Hopefully the food she eats away from home, especially at school, is 100% gluten-free. If you haven't checked in with the school directly about this, it might be worth a planned visit with their staff to make sure her food is safe.
