Hi,

Does anyone know if Sarafem is gluten free? It is used to treat PMDD.

Thanks!

Hi,

I don't know but I have PMDD as well....have you found out anything yet?

I don't know if this is gluten free but I do know that is a form of prozac. Be very careful if you do decide to use this product. Celiacs can have some very unexpected effects from this type of med. Both of my children have taken this product and one started cutting and became suicidal and the other became clearly psychotic and would have taken others along with him when he killed himself. Fortunately he was hospitalized at the time and the doctors got him off it very quickly.

Before you start a psychotropic drug for PMDD I hope you will give the diet a good try for at least a few months and add a sublingual B12 to your vitamins. Many of us see the severe PMDD problems resolve once we have been gluten-free for a bit. My DS and I had severe life constraining depression and anxiety that have lifted totally gluten-free. The only time we have any issues any longer are if glutened.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
