Why Different Reference Ranges?

I got my kids' blood tests back today and they are all negative, which is great and terrible. Great because they most likely don't have celiac, but terrible because now we have figure out what in the world is causing my daughter's diarrhea (sounds just like me).

My question is why there are different reference ranges for each of them for the serum IGA. They all went to the same lab, yet the reference range is different on all three? One range is 64-246, one is 70-432, and one is 41-368. Why are they all different if they are being tested for the same thing at the same lab???

Blood tests can come out wrong. If your daughter does well on a gluten-free diet then you know to keep her on it. A lot of people have luck with elimination diets and allergen testing. Good luck, ChocolateLover.

Some lab results vary between sex, and age.

The reference range for total serum IgA is based on age... different ages, different stages of life, different IgA ranges.

chocolate lover: she could still be gluten intolerant, just not Celiac. Same culprit...gluten. :)

I'm thinking that she and I will be Gluten-free Casein-free together and see what happens. It's so hard to see them going through this kind of stuff, especially at such a young age. BTW, they are 13, 10 and 7. I wouldn't think they would have different ranges since they are so close in age, but who knows why they do what they do. I guess I'm just a little skeptical because this is the same lab that I think screwed up my tests.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
