Has any one heard if Congress has passed or even voted on H. Con. Res. 457 making the month of May National Celiac Awareness Month?

Just wondering why as a large group why there is no talk of getting the month of May the National Celiac Awareness Month. I wonder if the Congress Man/Woman that sponsered/cosponsered the bill was on this forum and saw not one person was excited enough to post support for this bill would it make him/her rethink their effort for this bill. I am new to this so I maybe missing something. Personally I think it would be great for people with Celiac to have a whole month dedicated Nationally to our issue's. I read the post where people get excited that someone mentions Celiac for 15 seconds but we show no support for this bill. I am confused because as a large group we can make a difference. ;)

Hi,

I was just looking to see if there was a celiac awareness month and found a few different answers to this. I thought that October has already been designated as Celiac Awareness month. https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=411. Is this something different?

When my daughter was first diagnoised in Nov-06 I ran across a group called "American Celiac Disease Alliance" and they were asking people to support H. Con. Res. 457 and National Celiac Awareness Month (May). They have a prepared e-mail to send to your Congress person, so I did. A few days later my Congress man wrote me a letter stating he was one of the co-sponsers of the bill. I thought people on this forum would know about this and support it. I will personally do any thing I can to bring more awareness to this disease. My family will go to Washington DC to do whatever we can to support our Congressman on the passage of this bill. I have never heard of October being the Awareness month, but I am for that as well.

October is already the offical month...but I think it shares it with breast cancer so maybe they are trying to change it?

As a life.long celiac, I understand this.  I simply ask that the medical profession stop disregarding the fact that it should remain a concern for some. It cost me a lot of medical discomforts.

@dmallbee, about 8% of celiacs react to the oat protein avenin like they do to the wheat protein gluten. In addition, there are some cultivars of oats that apparently do actually contain gluten.

I was diagnosed at 18 months old with celiac and lived without wheat, rye, oats, and barley as instructed by my doctor, Dr. Katz at Boston Children's Hospital in the 60's and 70's. I don't agree nor recommend doctors removing oats from restriction, certified gluten-free or not.  I have eaten certified gluten free oats and have had the usual reactions to gluten.  Please reconsider this with newly diagnosed patients.
