I Fell Off The Wagon!

morning everyone, well i fell of the wagon yesterday and ate the oatmeal, choco chip cookie that the baby didnt want. so after a couple of hours i had a rash on the back of both my legs, and this morning my hands are itchy as well my toes are itch and a little swollen. sigh-trying to do this, im good most days but im sure every one here had their breaking moments once in a while in the begining to. anyone else get this swollen itchy toe thing? the rash is gone on my legs at least, plus my chin is tingly and itchy.

Well you can look at it this way, now you know for sure and for certain that you don't want to cheat again. The repercussions can be too severe. I hope this is all that happens, with me I would be tied to the bathroom 2 days later and ready to kill everyone in sight, or me. :D

Sometimes experience really is the best teacher. Hope you get over this quickly.

I fell off the wagon, early in my gluten free days. The after effects were so much worse than before I knew I had celiac. This is enough for me to not cheat. Its kinda of one of those live and learn lessons. Hope you feel better soon. By the way, my symptoms are also all GI related so I was miserble as well.

:unsure::o I also hope that is the extent of your reaction. I also get a severe case of the hives as well as having to stick close to the bathroom. I have both Celiac disease and the Dermatitis thing going. I sure hope you start feeling better, maybe keep some gluten free goodies on hand. That way you won't be tempted to eat the other stuff. Judy :P

I hope you're feeling better. :( The best way I found to keep temptation at bay is to keep a big stash of gluten-free goodies. There are always those days when you're just ticked at the whole situation. Massive amounts of chocolate can go a long way toward making yourself feel better.

The automatic mom thing can be hard to adjust out of too. I totally blanked out one day at ate the last few cheese crackers off my daughter's plate before I realized what I was doing - I was supposed to be eating gluten for testing, but wasn't planning on eating any that day.

I get a rash on the backs of my hands, and my scalp and the insides of my ears itch sometimes. The itching/pain goes away after a day or two, but the appearance of the rash doesn't go away for about three weeks or so.

I too fell off the wagon at first. Last March in Hawaii on a trip. I paid for it dearly.

I still have problems with traveling and eating at restaurants. It's bad enough that you get "gluten'd" inadvertently, and that happens often enough to keep me on the wagon all the time.

I get severe DH anywhere and everywhere. And the inside of my ears itch terribly.

Right now I have rash on my shins and ankles from picking at a meal on a plane. They didn't get my gluten-free meal order on time and it was a 7 hr flight. So they tried to give me something that would be gluten-free, but it was contaminated!

Then there's the "lunch out" problem. I TRY to steer people to a place I can trust but don't always succeed. They all LOVE pizza places and I have to eat potato chips for lunch at a pizza place.

Oh well. I'm itching right now from last weeks trip. The rash takes WEEKS to go away.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.
