I was at my local health food store looking at protein shakes, and they all have some sort of dairy/whey in them.

Do you know of any that are gluten free and DAIRY free?

We were talking about whey protein on a different thread recently and someone brought up goatein. Don't know if that would work for you or not though.

I haven't tried the Goatein yet, but may pick some up this weekend. My problem with dairy is the casein, and there are some who believe the casein in goat milk is different enough so that it might not be a problem for me. I'm going to find out I guess.

Here is the link for you to look at Open Original Shared Link

There is also a few different brands of rice protein powder. I've used a few of those, but the carb count was usually higher than I'd like personally. If you're not concerned about that part, then some health food stores have pure rice protein powders.

Oh, and I can't remember if I've ever seen any "premixed" protein drinks that fit that description...there are probably some soy kinds.

This is gluten free and casein free, to the best of my knowledge. I'm assuming you don't have issues with eggs. I use this shake for weight GAIN, not loss, but it also works for a protein shake. I am Gluten-free Casein-free and I have had some success with a combination of Rose Acre Farm dried egg whites (cage free!) mixed with Almond Breeze Chocolate (Sweetened with evaporated cane juice) Almond Milk.

1 tablespoon of the egg white powder is 50 calories and 11 grams of protein.

4oz of almond milk is 60 calories and 1 gram of protein.

If you call that a "serving" you get 110 calories per serving and 12g of protein per 4oz of shake. Not much in itself but it scales up quite nicely.

I typically will scale this up 3-5 times after a workout to get between 330-550 calories and 36-60 grams of protein. Not bad for 12-20oz of beverage which tastes really good and is easy to drink. Mixes fine in a shaker cup as well.

I've found this to be the best (and most natural) solution for me. If you can't deal with almond milk (I like it better than soy/rice) you could choose soy/rice milk instead.

You can buy the egg whites online at Rose Acre Farms website. You can buy the Almond Breeze at Trader Joe's or online at Almond Breeze's website. I have no affiliation with either.

Hope that helps!

Ah yes, I do have egg whites that I add to my smoothies...these are powdered and I found mine at Whole Foods.

I have been drinking this:

Open Original Shared Link

I called and it is completely dairy free and they said they add no gluten to the protein at all. They also said they clean the equipment before different batches, however, they cannot certify the product is gluten-free (not sure too many companies can do that anyway). It comes in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla and is sweetened with stevia.

Sometimes I use Jay Robb's egg white protein powder and mix it with rice milk. It's pretty good :)

I use a variety of protein powders for drinks or meal replacements; I aim to keep all my powders natural and low carb with no sweeteners or artificial sweeteners (they do contain stevia, except for the hemp and rice). The following are gluten-free and CF/lactose free/soy corn nut free/ no sweeteners or fake sweeteners- not even stevia: Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Protein (can buy anywhere online or Whole Foods, though amazon .com has the best deal right now with the brand Nutiva), and Vegan Rice Protein (doesn't mix well but is easily available at Whole Foods).

I also have found that the Jay Robb Vanilla Egg white protein is great (arguably the best) (contains stevia). The protein is from free range natural no hormone chickens, etc. but is expensive; it only contains egg, soy lecithin, stevia, etc. It is "made in a facility" but I have never reacted to it as contaminated (see note below for exception) and I am extremely sensitive to gluten. He guarantees no dairy, sweeteners, etc on the canister and the company is excellent- a few months after I bought my first canister from the Jay Robb website, I received an email that my batch had been contaminated with whey in the factory. When I followed up and contacted the company, they were very nice, they apologized for the cross-contamination and even sent me a completely free (free shipping also) canister of the new improved formula! I am pleased with their company and highly recommend Jay Robb if you can afford it.

Since I have been addressing my gluten issue, I find I can tolerate particular whey proteins also. Biochem makes a great line of whey-based proteins, most notably Greens and Whey, which are gluten-free and lactose free- they are the highest quality whey protein I have found and the Greens N' Whey gives the green superfood added benefit the other powders do not (it does contain Stevia in the Vanilla flavor). I don't know if you can tolerate whey in any form, but if you become daring and try it out be sure to only get whey isolate processed at low temperatures from cows not treated with hormones, etc. Any whey "combination" or non-pure isolate contains lactose. I do not know about casein in the powder, you'd have to call.

I am not doing these powders justice so please feel free to check out their websites- at the very least the hemp and rice proteins are guaranteed gluten-free CF, etc. Good luck!

GNC has some pretty good Soy protein powder. THe chocolate and strawberry are gluten and dairy free but the vanilla is not. I always add some friut to the shake and it makes it a bit better. Not as good as the whey protein shakes but I do feel better drinking them instead of the dairy ones.

@Shining My Light, Yes, celiac is spelled differently in Great Britain.  Yes, please do consider us as part of your support circle.   I had a serious Vitamin D deficiency, too.  I learned Vitamin D acts as a hormone when at levels between 78-100 nmol/L.  Mine was in the single digits.  I had been in declining health for years without answers.  I had developed hormone problems and clinical depression among other symptoms.  I corrected my Vitamin D deficiency with high doses to get my level up quickly.  Yes, it's safe.  Here's some studies done on high dose Vitamin D. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34737019/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39125420/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35470105/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30611908/ My Vitamin D deficiency was just the tip of the deficiency iceberg.  I was deficient in the B vitamins, too.  Celiac Malabsorption affects all the vitamins and minerals, not just one.  Here are some articles about how the B vitamins and even Vitamin D help lower anxiety... https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33848753/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35156551/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35851507/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35851507/ https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/

@trents I’m pretty sure what I’m left with when separating celiac to other causes is my 10% being a virus. The one I had about 3 weeks before taking this TTG test. Everything I’ve read says type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis and some viruses are what could cause the elevation. The other blood tests I had I can compare things against.  I’m going to give your article a thorough read. My support in my circle is very small at the moment.  @knitty kitty I think before EGD I would like to do the DNA test. I’m going to start keeping a better journal also.  I’ve read a crazy amount of these “articles” - these two I’ve not seen. Some articles spell celiac differently. Thank you for sharing! I’m gonna dive into those.   I started seeing the functional medicine doctors from fluctuations in my hormones and major anxiety. Recently I realize it’s mostly health anxiety also so this is more challenging to depict real from imaginary thus all the research and the back and forth. I know anxiety to be a common symptom in perimenopause. I’ve fought it my whole life however. Likely due to lots of different trauma but seeing her was my last ditch effort to try something to avoid SSRIs, HRT, etc. She told me not to blame everything on my hormones when there could be an underlying problem, so she ran some tests to see if anything stood out. The TGG tests stood out.  I do find it very interesting now that I think about it that I don’t desire bread, pasta and pizza. Sometimes yes, but mostly no. I guess I didn’t give that much thought. Also didn’t realize that those foods do contain more gluten than the tortillas and cake/baked goods. About 3 months ago I started ordering meal kits to make dinner easier. I went back over the menus that I picked. I have probably had bread and pasta a hand full of times over the last couple months prior to having that blood test. We used to get pizza every Friday and stopped doing that also. I’m all fairness about 2 months leading up to these blood tests I had less gluten containing foods than I thought.    I’ve been praying for wisdom. Thankful to find some counsel from people who I believe have dove harder into this than most doctors have. Thanks for all the advice. It’s appreciated more than you know. 💕

@knitty kitty My whole family has migraines and I started getting them at age 19, so I'm not sure mine are related to gluten, although I do feel like obviously the more inflamed my whole system is, the more likely I am to suffer from more of these things.
    • knitty kitty
@Alibu, Just wanted to add... Migraines can be caused by thiamine insufficiency.  I used to have them, regularly, but haven't since supplementing with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Magnesium Threonate.  These forms get into the brain easily and really improve migraines.  I do still get Ophthalmic migraines which are triggered by computer screens.  It's permanent damage from nutritional deficiencies.  An Erythrocyte Transketolace test is a more accurate test for sufficient thiamine. Keep us posted on your progress!

@knitty kitty Thank you for those, I will definitely bring them up!  I did send a message to my doctor basically asking what they think so I'll go from there.  He may very well just decide that this was enough to diagnose celiac, but I have no clue what his thoughts are right now.  I also asked for a second opinion on the pathology.
