Hi

I'm new to this but could really do with talking to people in the same boat. I've been a cealiac officially since Nov,06 thats when i started my gluten free diet, before i started my diet i'd been on anti-depressants came off them beginning of the year though, cos being newly diagnosed as a cealiac i though that could have been the reason behind the depression, took awhile for the diet to kick in but in 4 months i started to feel fantastic all the symptons seemed to have vanished, then i got complacent and didn't check a label, blew it big time i'd forgotten not all ketchups are safe, but it totally messed me up the physical symptons were bad enough but i thought i was going nuts ive never felt so angry in my life, argued with everyone, (two peole still aren't talking to me) snapped at the kids i was like jekyll and hyde it was awful because no one new what was going on at first, it was my daughter who found the culprit lurking in the cupboard, thankgod it took about a month to start feeling one hundred percent, but i blew it again last week you wouldn't think that pickled onions would contain gluten i never gave the vinegar there pickled in a second thought ,so i lost the plot again no fun for anyone as you can imagine, i've found lots of information on the physical side of celiac disease and i know it can cause depression but please if anyone else has sypmtons like these or if you feel depressed or anxious after eating gluten i beg you please let me know thanks

i'm a bit new to this site as well but here is something that may make you feel not so alone...

I too get very mean and easily agitated when i get glutened. I also get extremely depressed. I feel so bad for my 3 kids the days i'm "mean mommy". I got diagnosed June 26 and have been gluten free since that day. I also found out the hard way that i'm soy intolerant as well. Make sure other food intolerances aren't making you evil too.

Hang in there, i've been gluten-free for 5 weeks and slowly getting back to normal!!!! My kids like me better these days :).

Celiaction Rookie

As I got clean and theoretically my gut healed and got more efficient I twice experienced what could have been discribed as Sugar Rage - once from eating potato fries (starch=glycemic spike). Fortunately I was driving and I harshed on other drivers with most the effect being mitigated by my windshield. ;(

gfpaperdoll Rookie

angry, moody, outbursts... is a common symptom in my family of double DQ1 people

I take a b12 everyday you might try it, seems to even out the moodiness, but do not think it will do much for the gluten reaction - i get that also, I just want to crawl in a hole somewhere & stay there

You are not alone at all. For me this sort of effect was one of the most prominent features. I try to isolate myself as much as possible when this occurs, hard if you have a family. It does help me to tell myself it is a limited reaction and it will go away. The more gluten free I was and the longer I was the easier it has been for family members to understand that this is part of the disease. It is hard but it will pass. That's my mantra for the days when I either want to kill myself or others. :D

I, too, was experiencing some horrendous mood swings. I have seen a great improvement since taking sublingual B-12 (Puritan's Pride). :)

Thanks everyone,

Its true i don't feel so alone now, i really had started to believe i was the only person who felt like this, i mean there's loads of medical info on the symptons etc but nothing prepares you for how your going to react when you've eaten something containing gluten.

I was starting to think i was losing my mind, or that i should start taking anti-depressants again but now i know thanks to you guys that i'm not the only person who has this reaction i think i can keep going and take each day as it comes, also not to get complacent and always check the lables!!!!!

I'm also going to start taking vit B-12 after all i've got nothing to lose.

Well thanks again for your advice and honesty and i wish you all good luck on the gfd.

I too struggle with terrible mood swings, some days I feel as if I could just ring someones neck at any moment, other days I cry for no reason at all, I do take anti-depressants, but being on this diet and having people say to you, I wish I had that... so I couldn't eat this stuff, then I could lose weight, just really pisses me off!! They just don't understand the struggles we go through everyday with what we can and can't eat and if we do accidentally eat something we are not suppose too, how much it effects us. Some days I just want to curl up into a little ball and never face the world again, but then I think of my two kids and I really hate how this disease makes me feel on a day to day basis. Having to spend hours reading labels, food being so expensive for us, and no being able to be included in things that everyone takes for granted, like having a piece of pizza or a piece of birthday cake with your kids, but my kids are great about all of this and they are only 8 and 12 years old, I had my 8 year daughter tested and was so glad when the test came back negative, I truly didnt want her to have to go thru everything I have had to go thru. Having to explain to someone who doesn't have this disease how you feel or why you are feelign the way you do is just so hard and is very frustating at times, my husband is very supportive and helps me every way he knows how too, but it really helps having this forum here to have people to talk to that know exactly what i am feeling, thanks for listening to me vent.

Hi I know exactly how you feel i could've written that myself, even to the point that i also have two children, both my children have also been tested, both negative thankfully, like you i was dreading that my children would end up going through all that i've been through, i know just because their neg now that the could still develope it at sometime in their lives but i'll just have to pray they don't.

Last week when i left my message i was so low i was at the point that i would have willingly starved to death then mess up again but finding this forum and peolpe replying and letting me know i wasn't alone and that other people were suffering in the same way i was helped me feel kinda normal still, if that makes sense, it made me realise and believe that what was happening to me was because of the gluten and that i wasn't losing my mind and that helped me so much.

This week i feel so much more positive about my future and i know that if i ever mess up again that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that all those feeling and the aching and tiredness will pass and i will feel better, mind you hopefully i won't mess up anytime soon!!!

So i know its hard and i know exactly what your going through but please don't give up it does get better, you will feel better and when useless idiots tell you they wish they were cealiacs dare them to try just one week following the diet they'll soon change their minds trust me oh and get your own back if they visit feed then only gluten free food they'll soon get the message.

Just remember it does get better so don't give up just make sure you stick to the gfd okay

that's the thing when i tell people just exactly how hard it is and when they have to actually look at just how many things have wheat and gluten in them they are totally shocked by it, and then they think, I really don't know how you do it, and the thing is, is this disease may not be live threatening but it is definately life alterating for all of us, and it is a huge adjustment, and for most of us, it is something we HAVE to do to make us feel whole again, and healthy.

yesterday i accidentally ate something with wheat in it, i thought i was safe eating hashbrowns from mcdonalds but just as soon as i ate it, i felt sick so i looked up the nutritional info. on the website and it now lists them as having wheat. I immediately knew it, my stomach was in a knot and i had to rush to the bathroom, for the rest of the day i was unable to eat, and today i feel sluggish and my head hurts, it never fails i think i am doing good and then it hits you like a ton of bricks. have a great day everyone, and safe away from that gluten!!!

I have noticed that I can get easily aggitated and will take it out on someone who has done nothing wrong to me. I notice I sometime will say very hurtful things too. It has gotten better but pre celiac wow! I was very mean and that is not me.

Hi

then i got complacent and didn't check a label, blew it big time i'd forgotten not all ketchups are safe, but it totally messed me up

Oh god. I did that a few days ago...I didn't read the label on the ketchup and got sick...When I get sick, it takes me about almost a month to get back to 90ish%. And yea, I get terrible mood swings when i'm glutened. Everyone thinks i'm just naturally angry and upset. But it's the gluten I tell you! Utherwise, i'm the nicest person on the planet.

I was diagnosed in the past (10+ years ago) with an anxiety disorder & took antidepressants for years. I took myself off of them about 2 years ago, & while I had a good improvement just using cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques to help with the anxiety, I had the best improvement in my anxiety & depression after going gluten free in January of this year! I've been back on gluten for 6 weeks currently while having blood tests & biopsy done, & I've noticed my anxiety, depression, mood swings, tearfulness, & "snapping"/irritability are really bad. You're definitely NOT alone in this!

I'm a psychotherapist for kids, & I tell their parents to really watch what they eat, because the kids who are highly anxious, or have ADHD seem to be very sensitive to foods. There's even research linking an improvement in symptoms of Autism & Schizophrenia to cutting gluten & casein out of their diets! Good luck...the symptoms hopefully will pass soon once the gluten is out of your system again.

The insanely angry mood swings are usually my first clue that I have been mildly glutened. It's in the middle of screaming that I realize normally I wouldn't be like this, must be something I ate. Then I just want to crawl into a hole for a few weeks until I feel better. The moods are the worst part of this diet.

my daughter said to me the other day that she wished there was no such thing as celiac disease, she is eight years old, because she knows how much i struggle with this, i just wanted to cry, and i said to her, that i wished that there was no such thing as celiac disease too, but i was glad that she was here to help me through it.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
