Hi

So I have a doctors appointment for next week. I know it is better to wait until you get all your tests done but.... I was originally diagnosed as a toddler and I've been feeling so miserable lately. I've decided to just go ahead and try it.

I did a great job until a little while ago... forgot about the imitation crabmeat in the california rolls!! oh well, live and learn I guess. I bought a bunch of gluten free items from the supermarket. Soy pudding was very tasty!!!

But not sure about some items. Are these things okay????

balsalmic vinegar

chicken (plain)

fresh spinach

fresh carrot

tofu cheese

regular butter

eggs

honey

yogurt

fresh mushrooms

Guess I should buy a book with a good list in it.

If a item says gluten free can I trust that it is truly gluten free???

The fresh veggies and eggs should be good. What items say gluten free? Are they items tou bought today at your store? Some grocery stores label gluten free on their products. Walmart's Great Value brand and also Wegmans both label their store brands.

If you were diagnosed as a toddler, you really don't need any more testing, you still have celiac disease. In those days they falsely believed you outgrow celiac disease, but they were wrong. Teenagers often stop having symptoms for a few years (while the damage continues) for whatever reason. But you pay later for eating gluten again.

Everything naturally gluten-free is good, like fresh meat, eggs, veggies, fruit. Unless you thicken them with flour (or make gravy with it instead of a gluten-free alternative) you can't go wrong here.

Make sure you don't buy yoghourt that has been thickened with wheat starch. Try all natural.

Everything else you mentioned should be fine, unless you are also intolerant to dairy and soy (and there is a fairly good chance you may be).

Question on something you said...you said: "Teenagers often stop having symptoms for a few years (while the damage continues)...." This is so interesting to me. How did you know that? Or where did you find that out? The reason I ask is b/c I remember having problems up until I was a teenager. Then, when I was in college I got a major rash on my nose and cuts in the corners of my mouth. With meds and topical cream, this went away. Then, when I was 21 I had a tonsillectomy. Ever since, I've had nothing but problems with stomach and mouth. Does this sound right to you?!

Jackie...it is VERY tough...I understand what you are going through. Be very careful with the cheese, butter, eggs. I have problems with those. In addition, yeast MAY bother you, so watch out for the mushrooms. The yogurt, if made with Modified food starch is not a good choice. Go all natural; plain meat,fruits and veggies. It's hard and it is by no means "fun" but you should start to feel better. If I get "glutoned" it takes me forever to recover. Good luck!

Just wanted to add that Yoplait will clearly list their gluten, and many containers say gluten free right on them. I wish I could get my son to eat the natural stuff. He doesn't like it plain and he will not eat any flavors with fruit chunks. :rolleyes:

      You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

      Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

      Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

      Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

      I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
