Gluten-free Cereals?

Which cold cereals are gluten-free? I saw that Rice Chex & Corn chex both have barley malt flavoring, as does Crispix. I also haven't found any gluten-free cornflakes yet, either. I know that Western Family Rice Krispies are gluten-free, but what about other cereals?

Danna Korn mentions that there is a gluten-free chex-like cereal, but she doesn't say what brand it is. Anyone know?

Health Valley's Corn Crunch-Em's and Rice Crunch-Em's are very similar to Chex.

Someone makes a Nutty Rice that's very good (but the Nutty Corn, as I recall, is not gluten-free).

I also like Kashi's Cranberry Sunrise.

Erewon makes a couple rice-crispie like cereals, one with freeze-dried berries that I rather like.

Nature's Path makes a Mesa Sunrise that's quite tasty, and one other whose name I forget.

And Arrowhead Mills makes gluten-free corn flakes and buckwheat flakes.

also--barbara's bakery makes a cereal called Puffins--the honey rice puffins is the only one gluten-free----kroger's christmas rice krispies havenot had barley in them for the last few years--their regular krispies do though--i buy Nature's Path corn flakes quite often and for chidren or you who like those kinds of cereal there is gorilla munch and 2 others i cant remember the name of-----they say that fruity and cocoa pebbles is gluten-free too---enjoy---deb :D

I have tried many and the only one I like is Puffins Cinnamon Cereal. The rest---so far--are dreadful. I MISS OATMEAL SO MUCH. I think of all the things I can't eat that are not gluten-free, that is the thing I miss the most. Really, the gluten-free thing isn't all that bad at home (eating out is still quite a challenge) but I tried Bob's Tasty Hot Cereal and MAJOR UGH!!!!!!!!! Also cream of rice. YUK. I will be watching this thread for more suggestions. Tried the coco crispies too, didn't like those or the cranberry sunshine. As for the milk, those of us that have to do casein free also......rice milk is the most like skim milk to me and it has to be real cold.

I like cream of rice cereal, only after I put maple syrup and brown sugar in it. Mmm.. I eat Fruity Pebbles on a regular basis and have never had a problem. But, if you're looking for a chocolate cereal, I would recommend Koala Crisps instead of Cocoa Pebbles. Those are really good and CF as well. I also like Peanut Butter Panda Puffs. They just have a hint of peanut butter taste to them. Those are the cereals that I enjoy. :)

I like BRM's Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal IFF I make it with soy milk, honey, and cinnamon (and vanilla). Otherwise, very bland.

celiac3270 I love the Arrowhead Mills Rice & Shine hot brown rice cereal. It is so much better tasting than the Cream of Rice cereal I buy at the regular store. I was very disappointed because my local Whole Foods stopped carrying this hot cereal! :o But I finally found it online and I'm waiting for a shipment of 6 boxes!!

We like the Rice Crunch-ems and Corn Crunch-ems. I think they taste just like Chex.

Perky's Nutty Rice is good, if you liked grape-nut cereal.

We eat Malt-o-Meal brand Cocoa Dino Bites and Fruity Dino Bites. They are a better texture than the Post Pebbles cereals.

Malt-o-Meal also makes Corn Bursts that are like Corn Pops.

Enviro-kids Amazon Frosted Flakes and Gorilla Munch are good too. We didn't like the Panda Puffs and haven't tried the Koala Crisps.

We have gotten the Puffin's cereal, but only the Honey Rice is gluten-free, I think the other flavors have oat flour in them. Too bad, because we liked the cinnamon flavored one better than the honey rice.

I've noticed that my kids eat way more sugar loaded cereal now that we are gluten-free. <_< I don't like that, but there are so few options out there. It seems that most gluten-free cold cereals are either loaded with sugar, or they taste so bland that the kids won't touch them...That just has got to change! That is why we like the hot cereal. I still flavor it with a little sugar, but not nearly as much. Or the kids have toast and fruit. My daughter has eggs occasionally, but the boys won't eat them, except on French Toast. I make French Toast a couple times a week. Breakfast has certainly changed since going gluten-free...

Mariann, you might consider getting some freeze dried fruits (Just Veggies makes them, among other things - like camping stores) and add them to the more bland cereals. It's still sugar, but at least a bit healthier than straight up sugar.

i have found that Kelloggs corn pops are gluten-free but that seems to be the only cold cereal that I have found so far as I have only been on this fun diet for 3 months now. As far as hot cereals go I enjoy the Arrowhead Mills "rice and shine" but can only tlerate it by putting sliced fruit and/or raisins in it.

:( read the kelloggs corn pops ingredients very carefully--from what i understand they have changed the recipe and it now contains barley malt--i dont think corn pops are gluten-free anymore----deb :(

Absolutely. In the U.S. since last January Corn Pops has had wheat. It's plainly listed.

Great cold & hot cereal ideas, thanks!

I think it'd be difficult to eat just plain hot any kind of cereal without some kind of mix in. Some mix ins we've done (with oatmeal anyway) are

cinnamon apple - mix in fresh chopped apples when the water is boiling, then add cinnamon (or apple pie spice) and other sweetener

Maple cinnamon - maple syrup & cinnamon

fruit & Cream - dried peaches (or strawberries or whatever you find) in the boiling water, (or add canned/frozen after you've cooked it) then add a bit of dried milk & sweetener after its cooked.

raisin spice - add raisins when water is boiling if you like them plump, otherwise wait until cereal is cooked. Then add cinnamon or dash of nutmeg, cloves, and/or ginger (a little goes a long way) with some sweetener

Honey vanilla - add a bit of vanilla and some honey after it's cooked.

I like Arrowhead Mills Buckwheat flakes. I thought the flakes would be bland but they are very tasty, especially with chocolate almond milk.

Although Keklloggs Corn Pops recently added wheat (sadly), I just discovered Pathmark brand Corn Nuggets that are gluten-free--tastes just like the Kelloggs!

Also Whole Foods "365" brand makes Honey Frosted Flakes that are gluten-free--taste just like Kelloggs Frosted Flakes! Why can't Kelloggs make it like the gluten-free competitors!?

My kids like Peanut Butter Panda Puffs and Barbara's Honey Rice Puffins. Also, Health Valley's Rice Crunch 'Ems and Corn Crunch 'Ems are very similar to Rice Chex and Corn Chex--pretty good.

And for hot cereal, Quaker Instant Grits (which is corn) are delicious--I add butter and milk and microwave for 1 minute!

And believe it or not, unlike most people, I've always loved Puffed Rice (even before I was on a gluten-free diet!).

I agree 100% with Cynicaltomorrow ~ I love Panda Puffs, Malt-O-Meal Dyno crisps (I think that is the name) ~ I use Silk soy milk. Yummy!!! :rolleyes:

My favorite hot cereal is cream of buckwheat that I make this way...for half the liquid called for I use a VERY strong herbal peach tea (steeped for several minutes at least) for the other half I use a sweetened vanilla soymilk. It turns out like peaches and cream! Then, I cut up half an apple into a bowl, drizzle a little maple syrup on it and nuke it for 20 seconds. I put the cream of buckwheat on this, sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of flaxmeal or sunflower seeds and add some more vanilla soymilk. This is really good!

For cold cereal I like a mixture of Corn Crunch'ems, Mesa Sunrise and Cranberry Sunshine, add extra dried cranberries and lowfat lactaid milk or unsweetened soymilk on top.

My kids like fruity pebbles (when I let them have them!) but mostly eat Gorilla Munch or Corn or Rice Crunch'ems (since they are lower in sugar than most.) My teenager likes to mix Panda Puffs (peanut butter flavored) with Koala Crisp (chocolate flavored) as an after school snack.

I'd not thought about making french toast, I will do that since I'm becoming a bread baking fiend these days! :D (Btw, I saw a recipe that cooked french toast on a waffle maker. It looked very cool! I'm going to try that tomorrow.)

You do know Puffins Cinnamon Cereal aren't considered gluten-free, right ?

The Oats (ALL oats) are too easily contaminated for celiacs. I think it's even fair to say not just that they can be, but that most samples actually are contaminated.

(i vaguely remember data putting it around 50-66%)

      @rei.b,  I understand how frustrating starting a new way of eating can be.  I tried all sorts of gluten-free processed foods and just kept feeling worse.  My health didn't improve until I started the low histamine AIP diet.  It makes a big difference.   Gluten fits into opioid receptors in our bodies.  So, removing gluten can cause withdrawal symptoms and reveals the underlying discomfort.  SIBO can cause digestive symptoms.  SIBO can prevent vitamins from being absorbed by the intestines.  Thiamine insufficiency causes Gastrointestinal Beriberi (bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or constipation).  Thiamine is the B vitamin that runs out first because it can only be stored for two weeks.  We need more thiamine when we're sick or under emotional stress.  Gastric Beriberi is under recognised by doctors.  An Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test is more accurate than a blood test for thiamine deficiency, but the best way to see if you're low in thiamine is to take it and look for health improvement.  Don't take Thiamine Mononitrate because the body can't utilize it well.  Try Benfotiamine.  Thiamine is water soluble, nontoxic and safe even at high doses.  I thought it was crazy, too, but simple vitamins and minerals are important.  The eight B vitamins work together, so a B Complex, Benfotiamine,  magnesium and Vitamin D really helped get my body to start healing, along with the AIP diet.  Once you heal, you add foods back in, so the AIP diet is worth doing for a few months. I do hope you'll consider the AIP diet and Benfotiamine.

      Imemsm, Most of us have experienced discontinued, not currently available or products that suddenly become seasonal.   My biggest fear about relocating from Maryland to Florida 5 years ago, was being able to find gluten-free foods that fit my restricted diet.  I soon found out that the Win Dixie and Publix supper markets actually has 99% of their gluten-free foods tagged, next to the price.  The gluten-free tags opened up a  lot of foods that aren't actually marked gluten-free by the manufacture.  Now I only need to check for my other dietary restrictions.  Where my son lives in New Hartford, New York there's a Hannaford Supermarket that also has a gluten-free tag next to the price tag.  Hopefully you can locate a Supermarket within a reasonable travel distance that you can learn what foods to check out at a Supermarket close to you.  I have dermatitis herpetiformis too and I'm very sensitive to gluten and the three stores I named were very gluten-free friendly.  Good Luck

      Okay well the info about TTG-A actually makes a lot of sense and I wish the PA had explained that to me. But yes, I would assume I would have intestinal damage from eating a lot of gluten for 32 years while having all these symptoms. As far as avoiding gluten foods - I was definitely not doing that. Bread, pasta, quesadillas (with flour tortillas) and crackers are my 4 favorite foods and I ate at least one of those things multiple times a day e.g. breakfast with eggs and toast, a cheese quesadilla for lunch, and pasta for dinner, and crackers and cheese as a before bed snack. I'm not even kidding.  I'm not really big on sugar, so I don't really do sweets. I don't have any of those conditions.  I am not sure if I have the genes or not. When the geneticist did my genetic testing for EDS this year, I didn't think to ask for him to request the celiac genes so they didn't test for them, unfortunately.  I guess another expectation I had is  that if gluten was the issue, the gluten-free diet would make me feel better, and I'm 3 months in and that hasn't been the case. I am being very careful and reading every label because I didn't want to screw this up and have to do gluten-free for longer than necessary if I end up not having celiac. I'm literally checking everything, even tea and anything else prepacked like caramel dip. Honestly its making me anxious 😅

      So you're saying that you think you should have severe intestinal damage since you've had the symptoms so long?   DGP IgG antibodies are produced in response to a partial gluten molecule.  This is different than what tissue transglutaminase antibodies are  produced in response to.   TTg IgA antibodies are produced in the intestines in response to gluten.  The tTg IgA antibodies attack our own cells because a structural component in our cell membranes resembles a part of gluten.  There's a correlation between the level of intestinal damage with the level of tTg antibodies produced.  You are not producing a high number of tTg IgA antibodies, so your level of tissue damage in your intestines is not very bad.  Be thankful.   There may be reasons why you are not producing a high quantity of tTg IgA antibodies.  Consuming ten grams or more of gluten a day for two weeks to two months before blood tests are done is required to get sufficient antibody production and damage to the intestines.  Some undiagnosed people tend to subconsciously avoid lots of gluten.  Cookies and cakes do not contain as much gluten as artisan breads and thick chewy pizza crust.  Anemia, diabetes and thiamine deficiency can affect IgA antibody production as well.   Do you carry genes for Celiac?  They frequently go along with EDS.

      I was tested for celiac at the same time, so I wasn't taking naltrexone yet. I say that, because I don't. The endoscopy showed some mild inflammation but was inconclusive as to celiac disease. They took several biopsies and that's all that was shown. I was not given a Marsh score.
