Gluten-free Restaurants In Lancaster, Pa

Hi everyone! My mom has celiac disease, and I just wanted to post some information about restaurants in Lancaster, PA, in case anyone is nearby and is interested.

Carr's Restaurant, which is in downtown Lancaster, is SUPER-ACCOMMODATING!! My mom knows the owners, and they go out of their way to accommodate celiac. They have extremely delicious food...and even have a stand at Central Market, where you can buy dinners to go!

Fiorentino's Restaurant, which serves Italian fare, is located on the outskirts of Lancaster...once again, my mom knows the owners, and they are also awesome. They have really good salads...and a lot of dishes feature risotto, which celiacs can eat!!

Also at Central Market...we now have a gluten-free baker! He makes quiche, breads, dinner rolls, and YUMMY pastries--cream puffs, eclairs, cupcakes, pies, cakes, etc...he will even make a special birthday cake for you!! You can hardly tell his stuff is gluten-free...it's so good!! I will post his information, which I am sorry to say I don't have on hand right now. The stand is called The gluten-free Bake Shop, and he is at Market on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. He only has quiche on Tuesdays, and he has a larger selection of pastries on the weekend.

I am from Lancaster, PA as well. You mentioned Central Market. There is now a stand called This Little Piggy which make baby food up to todder/kid meals. She has gluten free versions of the toddler/kid meals. She also takes special orders if your child has special dietary needs such as a need for gluten and dairy free.

I just wanted to update this discussion. The Gluten Free baker at Central Market is gone. But there is a new stand called Blue Bandana and they sell fresh gluten free breads and muffins. Also Willow Valley has a stand and they have a freezer section of gluten free products.

Also I went to Yoders in New Holland( in Lancaster Co.) and had a wonderful meal! I called ahead and talked with a manager about the foods on the buffet and she gave me a long list of things I could eat and she also told me a few things to stay away from like their Bake Potatoes apparently they treat/flavor them with something that is not gluten free.

There's a nice little restaurant called Effie Ophelia which is also very accomodating. What was really nice was when I asked the waitress if the dessert I was considering had any "flour" - (I find it is easier to use the word flour than gluten to get my point across), and she replied, "Oh, you mean gluten? No, it does not have any gluten ingredients." That's always a good clue that the staff and chef know what they are doing. It is a bit pricey but they use fresh local ingredients and everything was excellent. I think it is on Prince Street.

There's a nice little restaurant called Effie Ophelia which is also very accomodating.       thank you RMJ! That is very helpful advice. Good to know we aren’t crazy if we don’t do the endoscopy. We are going to try the gluten free and see how symptoms and levels improve. thank you Wheatwacked (love the username lol) that is also reassuring. Thankfully she has an amazing and experienced pediatrician. And yesss I forgot to mention the poo...

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies. Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree. Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant. That may happen even with endoscopy. Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end...

      here are the lab ranges. Normal ranges for tissue transglutaminase are: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or = 15.0 Antibody detected normal for endomysial antibody is < 1.5. So she is barely positive but still positive.

Thankfully she has an amazing and experienced pediatrician. And yesss I forgot to mention the poop! She has the weirdest poop issues.    How long did it take y'all to start seeing improvement in symptoms?

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies.  Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree.  Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant.   That may happen even with endoscopy.  Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end you save the potential trauma of the endoscopy for your baby.   Mine also had really nasty poop.  His doctor started him on Nutramigen Infant because at the time it was the only product that was hypo allergenic and had complete nutrition. The improvement was immediate.

With family history it is likely she has the genes. 2.  Try a gluten free diet and see if the symptoms go away AND the antibody levels return to normal. (This is what I would do). Endoscopies aren’t always accurate in patients as young as your daughter. Unfortunately, without an endoscopy, some doctor later in her life may question whether she really has celiac disease or not, and you’ll need to be a fierce mama bear to defend the diagnosis! Be sure you have a good written record of her current pediatrician’s diagnosis. Doing a gluten challenge for an endoscopy later in life could cause a very uncomfortable level of symptoms.   Having yourself, your husband and your son tested would be a great idea.

      Just diagnosed today

      I have been diagnosed with coeliacs disease today after endoscopy, bloods and CT scan. I have also been diagnosed with Mesenteric Panniculitis today. Both of which I believe are autoimmune diseases. I have been told I will need a dexa scan and a repeat CT scan in 6 months. I had not even heard of Mesenteric Panniculitis till today. I don’t know much about it? Has anyone else got both of these.
