Could This Be Dh?

I'm still undiagnosed but have been gluten free for 2 weeks and feel a bit better. I have 7 siblings and wonder if any of them could have Celiac. One of my sisters just mentioned a rash she has. Does her description sound anything like DH?-"Mine is wierd, it's long and skinny bumps on an area a few inches wide on my arms, legs or chest...goes away after about an hour and only occurs in one or two areas at a time. I've been taking Benedryl and that seems to help. It's odd though, it usually happens in the evening and it happens every few days." She also mentioned it's very itchy.

I figured I would check before mentioning DH to her!

I would have to say its not dh, if it comes and goes that fast. Mine stays for a very long time and it is very itchy. But it does sound she is reacting to something she is eating. I would have her do an food diary and see what she eats before this outbreak, it could be anything from dairy to shellfish.

Im sure there is still an chance it could dh, or at least an reaction to wheat.

Just wanted to add my mom gets like that from shellfish, she breaks out on a rash on her arms and neck and she itches like crazy, then in a few hours she is fine.

Doesn't sound like DH. DH doesn't just go away that quickly.

I finally had my new doc confirm DH even after my internist insisted it was foliculitis. Ridiculous!! I figured out what it was be internet research and the 4th doc I went to confirmed it was indeed DH. I have been suffering for over a year with it and my latest episode is really bad (arm pits) and had it for months.

I was told it was my detergent, shower soap, deoderant, etc. I knew that it wasn't, but no one would listen to me!!

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
