Natural Flavorings

Hi. Does anyone know if "natural flavorings" sometimes contain gluten? What about on a spaghetti sauce ingredients list?

Thanks.

Yes, Natural Flavorings can contain gluten. Most likely, gluten in the form or barley, malt or rye. If wheat is used it must be labeled by law.

"Natural Flavorings" is pretty ambiguous and can mean just about anything . . .

That being said, there are lots of jarred spaghetti sauces that are OK. All the Classico red and white sauces are OK. Ragu will list any gluten so if it had gluten it would say something like 'natural flavoring(derived from barley)' or something like that. Somebody has probably already checked if you want to tell us which brand you are talking aout.

I agree with both! In my experience, "natural flavorings" is just a vague term- not specific enough to risk being glutened. Just get used to the habit of leaving it out if you aren't positive. There are plenty of substitutions :D

There a number of mainstream companies and/or brands that have a policy of clearly disclosing gluten by always naming the grain in plain language. With these manufacturers, if you don't see wheat, barley, rye or oats by name on the label, then you do not need to worry even if you see a dubious item like natural flavor or modified food starch.

My current list follows. It does not list every single brand--it may include the parent company without having every brand they own.

Arrowhead Mills, Aunt Nelly's, Balance, Baskin Robbins, Ben & Jerry, Bertoli, Betty Crocker, Blue Bunny, Breyers, Campbells, Cascadian Farms, Celestial Seasonings, ConAgra, Country Crock, Edy's, General Mills, Good Humor, Green Giant, Haagen Daz, Hellman's, Hormel, Hungry Jack, Jiffy, Knorr, Kozy Shack, Kraft, Lawry's, Libby's, Lipton, Martha White, Maxwell House, McCormick, Nabisco, Nestle, Old El Paso, Ortega, Pillsbury, Popsicle, Post, Progresso, Ragu, Russell Stover, Seneca Foods, Skippy, Smucker, Stokely's, Sunny Delight, T Marzetti, Tyson, Unilever, Wishbone, Yoplait, Zatarain's.

With this list in hand, you can visit the grocery store and shop with confidence.

I would take Hershey's off that list, after multiple calls over Easter Candy they cannot tell us what is in their natural flavorings....

Thanks, I've edited it out and removed it from my copy of the list.

Thank you all. I was wondering about the Western Family Traditional jarred spaghetti sauce, because I bought it in a hurry after only glancing at the ingredients. I've e-mailed the company, so hopefully I'll hear back from them. If not, it's not a big deal. I just won't use it and remember not buy unfamiliar products in a hurry again.

It is my understanding that Western Family is owned by ConAgra and as such follows their gluten disclosure policy. We use Western Family products and trust the ingredient lists not to hide gluten.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.

I had no idea there is a "Louisville" in Colorado!😉 I thought it was a typo because I always think of the Kentucky city--but good luck!
