So I get this e-mail because I inquired about Ketel One vodka (I had heard somewhere it was gluten-free)

Does this make sense to anyone?? Here is the email:

Dear Laura,

Thank you for your support of Ketel One and for visiting our website.

The following ingredients apply to both Ketel One Vodka and Ketel One

Citroen:

- Approximately 64 calories in a 1 ounce serving

- No carbohydrates

- 100% wheat

- No gluten

- No sugar

GLUTEN IS IN WHEAT!

What the heck?

I'm guessing that it is based on 100% wheat--and distilled. Distilled liquors are generally thought to be gluten-free, but there are people who will react to distilled liqior.

There are folks here who know much more about these things--feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. :D

You are quite right, and as many most likely know I am one of the people who do react.

I would suggest having one or two drinks three or four days in a row when not consuming anything else that is risky, and watching for a reaction. For those of us who do react to gluten grains they often have an overintoxicating effect and can give some really douzy of a hangover with very little injested so do take it easy though till you know.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.

It's great to hear that eliminating gluten has helped alleviate symptoms like eye burning, which is a significant and positive change. The first and most important step is to ensure you're consuming enough protein throughout the day to support muscle repair and growth, which can be challenging with a busy schedule. Since you're already physically active at work, adding focused strength training just 2-3 times per week can make a major difference. Bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups (modified if needed), and lunges, or using resistance bands at home, are excellent, efficient places to start. Remember, consistency with these short sessions and prioritizing post-workout recovery, including good sleep and hydration, are just as crucial as the workouts themselves. It's a smart, gradual process at any age.

Trader Joe's carries a good variety of affordable gluten-free foods like bagels, hamburger buns, pasta, etc. I like Franz Gluten Free bread, which is available at my local Costco. Food For Life and Little Northern Bakehouse (advertisers here) also make excellent gluten-free breads. Costco also sells gluten-free pizzas, crackers, gravy, etc.
