Just when we all thought gluten awareness by mfg's of food and drugs was getting better!! I found this in an ad that I got in email:

Read the allergen statement #1 (red) and then #2 (blue)

HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??? NOT Possible at all. Absurd.

NightKap (30 Capsules)

Suggested Usage : NightKap is made to be taken every night, 1 capsule 30 minutes before bedtime. May increase nightly by 1 capsule up to a total of 3 capsules nightly for deeper sleep or as directed by your health care professional.

I notice that they specify "no wheat GLUTEN," and "no soy PROTEIN." I wonder if this means they acknowledge the possibility that the product contains the starches of those items?

I don't trust wheat starch ever. I wouldn't trust that product!

"May contain xxx" can also be code for "processed in a facility that also processes xxx." Labeling for possible contamination is completely voluntary, and can take various forms:

May contain traces of xxx.

May contain xxx.

Processed in a facility that also processes xxx.

Manufactured on equipment that is also used for products containing xxx.

etc.

You must look at each case and make your own decision. Keep in mind that this is voluntary labeling. Just because you do not see this does not mean that there are no products with gluten made in the same facility or on the same equipment. Unless wheat is an intentional ingredient, they do not, by law, have to say anything.

As Sarah (Ridgewalker) pointed out, a product may be free of the protein of a plant while still containing starch from that plant. Or not. This is definitely a source of controversy.

I really have no intention of taking this product, but when the ad showed up I was stunned with that statement - never thinking of the wheat starch/wheat gluten controversy! (Same for Soy, I suppose - I don't have allergy to soy so don't pay attention).

I guess we'll see how this newest controversy pans out.

I found RICE CHEX with Gluten Free on the box and a statement about how it is great for people following a gluten-free lifestyle!

YUMMY, my breakfast for tomorrow!

I sure hope they remove the malt flavoring from Corn Chex soon too!

Then we can have CHEX MIX!!!!!! (with gluten-free pretzels of course)!

YES!

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
