Could I Have Celiac Disease

Katiejane Newbie

I am trying to find out what is wrong with me. I have seen my family doctor, two rheumatologists, and an allergist. I have a positive ANA, titer of >640, speckled pattern. All other blood tests for autoimmune diseases have been negative. I was diagnosed years ago with irritable bowel syndrome, then that was changed about a year ago to lactose intolerance. Now I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, asthma, and allergies to 73 out of 76 allergens tested. I have had a cough for four months, and chronic sinus infections for years. Today I had a CT of my chest, no results yet. I see a polmunologist this week at National Jewish Hospital in Denver.

Anyone care to take a stab at this?

Hi Katiejane, and welcome to these boards. IBS is NOT a valid diagnosis, as it is a bunch of symptoms which have a cause! If your bowels are irritated, something is causing that. In your case, it could be gluten, and/or soy as well as dairy (not just lactose, but ALL dairy), or any number of intolerances.

Your symptoms could well be celiac disease, or Lyme disease, or heavy metal toxicity (or a combination), as all of them cause leaky gut, leading to a ton of allergies/intolerances.

Have you been tested for celiac disease? You may want to initiate that, or just try the gluten-free diet to see if it helps. If going gluten-free doesn't make a difference, you'll need to look into other possibilities.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
