Positive Biopsy...

Hi,

It was my third endoscopy on Monday but my small bowel finally shows signs of inflammation (no villi death yet), and this was after going gluten-free for 3 months and being back on gluten for a month.

My question is. Along with a positive A . L . C . A . T and a positive IgG, is this enough to confirm celiac? Many people on this board have multiple food sensitivities. Can any of those cause small bowel inflammation? Or is gluten the only possible culprit.

Also, my doctor doesn't really like the idea of the A . L . C . A . T, and my positive blood test was "nonspecific." The others were normal.

I have some classic celiac symptoms, and others are not so classic (episodes of stomach - mid to left - pain and vomiting)

My doctor said, a gluten-free diet is worth a try and referred me to a nutritionist. Is this really celiac disease or could something else be causing the inflammation? The lab said either early celiac (yea right, my symptoms have been present for 5 years) or daily aspirin/advil user (which I don't do).

Thanks!

I say the biopsy results are definitely enough to do the gluten-free diet. If you improve on the diet, the biopsy results together with the positive diet response would be enough to officially diagnose you with celiac disease.

So, it would be good if you start with the gluten-free diet immediately!

Other symptoms that Celiac Disease can cause but resemble other diseases so the cause may be misdiagnosed. What Are the Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
