Coffee

I am curious if some of you might have problems with coffee? Every time I get glutened I have to stop drinking coffee for a few days for my body to heal. Since I have to do that, should I stop drinking coffee all together? I love my coffee, I have my 2 cups in the morning then drink water for the rest of the day. It is a treat for me. Anyway, if any of you experience problems with coffee please let me know. I have been ill for the last 2 weeks, went back to basic foods and still cant recover.

Thanks!

Jen

I noticed that when I get glutened, I too, have a hard time with coffee. I think the reason for me is that the gluten makes my head throb and I stay naseaous for about a day or so. Whether it's the caffeine, the acid, or the combination of both, I don't know, but when the inflammatory effects of gluten are raging in my body, those things only seem to aggravate them and make them worse. After the headache and the naseau wear off, coffee doesn't bother me at all. I stopped drinking coffee for a little while, but I didn't really see how it helped if I did get glutened. I still had the same symptoms.

So, I remain a slave to the java. I only drink it in the morning too, but that's just because I don't think anyone should drink caffeine all day. It's my vice, everyone's gotta have one.

hey, for many years i was a HUGE coffee drinker, and even moreso in the year that i was diagnosed. since going gluten free and really starting to see results, i started to drink less coffee just because i wanted to go easier on my tummy. then i really started to realize that coffee was making me nauseous more often than not. so recently i switched over to drinking green tea with honey in the morning. i even decided to cut out the artificial sweeteners b/c i know those are not good for you. i still have the occasional cup o' joe with some hazelnut coffee mate, but in general, i'm glad to have cut down as drastically as i did. i really feel a lot better without all of that caffeine.

Coffee bothered me too until I switched to cold brew coffee (I like the "Toddy" products). It is less acidic (and in my opinion it tastes even better).

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.
