Maltodextrin is the US is generally derived from corn. Any wheat would, by law, be required to be disclosed as "Maltdextrin (wheat)." It would be highly unusual to contain any other form of gluten.

According to my research, if the product is made in the US, then there is no gluten. From other countries there may be gluten.

The relevant US regulation is:

USA Code of Federal Regulations

Sec. 184.1444 Maltodextrin

CAS Reg. No. 9050-36-6. It is a nonsweet nutritive saccharide polymer that consists of D-

glucose units linked primarily by [alpha]-1-4 bonds and has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of less

than 20. It is prepared as a white powder or concentrated solution by partial hydrolysis of

cornstarch, potato starch or rice starch with safe and suitable acids and enzymes.

Note: FDA also permits the use of other starches including wheat. For example, if wheat is used

it must be labeled "wheat maltodextrin".

In Canada, it can also be taken as a given that maltodextrin, when appearing as that single word, is safe.

Hi, So just hypothetically, if a major food producer bought a ton of maltodextrin from China and used it to process foods in Texas which were then sold in the US with only maltodextrin listed and no wheat or other allergens listed, would it be legal by current laws?

I know it is supposed to be listed but is that limited to maltodextrin produced and used in the US?

I've always been paranoid about it since I ate something once and that was the only questionable ingredient. Have never eaten anything with maltodextrin again since, although it was from the US and not marked with allergens other than soy, It made me really ill.

My feeling is that this is a gray area when it comes to buying things from overseas.

Here in Canada, I have seen a number of imported products with a Canadian label attached over top of the original one for the ingredients and nutritional facts.

Of course, if a foreign supplier represented to the manufacturer that it was maltodextrin from corn when in fact it was not, that would be fraud.

In nearly eight years on the diet, I have never worried about maltodextrin, and have not had a problem.

I'll have to give it a try again one of these days. Since much of my work revolves around the fresh produce industry the regulations are much different. We keep pushing for laws in the US that would require labeling of country of origin, GMO and irradiation. None of it is required now.

Ken I found a few Haagen-Dazs without... (before I went back off dairy ;) one is the light version- Pineapple-Coconut all natural ingredients, and it's really delicious. I stick with their Sorbets now :)

Momma Goose I am not sure, I don't eat MSG either! LOL! :lol:

It will be 2 years of being gluten-free next week. My waist is smaller than it was but my stomach bigger than ever. With the last test I had no problem with dairy, soy or others but guess I should get tested again -- after I get back from Italy!

      I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

      Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you

      Of course my son is on a 100% gluten free diet.  I wish his symptoms were not debilitating as there are right now.  He cannot work, even when a miniscule of cross contamination occurs.  It's not just GI distress, but intense fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.  It's literally neurological inflammation.  Not to be taken lightly here.  We have sought out many other possible ways to cope during this window of time (8 months!!!!)  without success.   AN-PEP does not help and seems like studies on this are not well researched.  So, we are trying this out because research shows some promising results.  And, all participants showed no cravings afterwards, no signs of addiction.  The patch is different than the oral route such as smoking, vaping, gum, pouch, etc.

      Have you tried AN-PEP enzymes, for example, GlutenX (who is a sponsor here)? A lot of research has shown that it can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines. It might be a better approach than risking nicotine addiction, and the questionable research around this. I also hope that he’s trying to be 100% Gluten-Free.

      Hi all  I was diagnosed Coeliac a few years ago and follow a gluten free diet. The list of foods that I can eat without a problem grows shorter on a weekly basis. [I also have diabetes and asthma also].  BUT the reason I am posting this is because I seem to struggle with nausea quite a lot, which is really quite debilitating, and I was wondering if others suffer from nausea, even if following a gluten free diet.
