I have a question about nail polish. I know that the brand I use is not gluten-free (OPI) but I'm wondering if that is important. Can you absorb gluten through your nails or is it the skin surrounding them? And I suppose it could chip off and get in your food too. I guess I answered my own question but I jst wanted some confirmation before I discard all my nail polish and buy new stuff. Thanks to the link for honey bee- the acquarella stuff looks great too but I can't believe it's $18 a bottle! Thanks all, Beverly

Also check out No Miss products...their products are gluten free according to the company. They are a cheaper.

Well the problem with nail polish is you prepare food with your hands...if any of it chips in your food or gets on your food while preparing it.

I bet people put their hands to their mouth more then they think to ...and if your nails have wheat starch on them then it's ut oh.

I asked this question somewhere else, but this is probably the correct place to ask it. Sorry.

About the whole nail polish debate---what about if you just put it on the toe nails? I only paint my daughters toe nails so is it still a risk? Also, for other makeup, is it just important to get gluten-free foundations and powders, or also eye liner and eye shadow too? do eye shadows soak into the skin?

Soaking into the skin does not pose a threat. The only way to get a reaction is by it entering your mouth. The only thing that would cause a skin reaction is is you have DH or if there are medical patches which are specifically made to be absorbed.

Makeup for the face in my opinion should be gluten free. Anything you put on your hands, face, or head ...such as lotions, shampoos, cosmetics, etc have a high probability of getting into your mouth somehow.

Toe nails should not be a problem...the only reason fingers are is because you prepare food with your hands and they can chip off into your food and so forth.

on MAC makeup--I want to clarify NOT all MAC makeup is gluten free. Their amplified cream lipsticks and their lip conditioner definitely contain wheat. All Benefit lipsticks are gluten free. If anyone buys Sephora brand lipsticks, they responded to me saying they can not say whether their lipsticks have gluten or not. (That response is always helpful!) I also got some of the Bare Escentuals lipsticks and they work great. Thanks!

Oh, I was also going to say, for you internet shoppers, I bought my Bare Escentuals off of Sephora.com (love that site!). They have lots of their products. They are sell Benefit, which I mentioned earlier as having gluten-free lipsticks. Their makeup is good too.

I use cover girl loose powder- i've never had a problem with it, but does anyone know off hand if it is safe?

I was wondering the same thing is cover girl stuff safe? I know the lipsticks may not be but what about other stuff? like foundation, mascara, powder, and concealer?

CoverGirl confirmed with us that Continuous Color lip shades are gluten free. Their lipsticks with fragrance in they will not guarantee because of suppliers, etc.

I have always broke out from CoverGirl foundations..not sure if it is gluten or something else in it. I have not asked them about mascara, concealer, foundations because I have a set brand I use for all of those products but it would be interesting to know if those things are gluten free or not.

I use the Bare Escentuals makeup line..the whole line is gluten free.

I do have 1 shade of Continuous Color from CoverGirl though and a few Burt's Bees products

Clinique is good about helping you figure out what is gluten-free and what isn't. If I did my homework correctly, their city base spf 15 (or is it 25?) compact foundation is gluten-free (I use I think the shade called "fair" and their touch-base for eyes (I use "canvas"). Clinique has a soft pencil eyeliner that on the other end has some glittery powder in a matching shade -- can't remember the name of the eyeliner, but that also should be gluten-free if I did my homework correctly.

Mac has some gluten-free eyeshadows -- I have one in a skin tone. My mother has found some Almay products that are gluten-free, as well.

Also, if I did my homework right, the above products are supposed to be free of soy and any milk products, as well.

If you use Aveda products, be sure to check the labels. I formerly used TONS of their stuff -- shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer -- and had to give it all up because it all had either soy, gluten, or milk products in it.

Thanks for the Bare Escentuals tip!!! I want to check that out. Also the lipstick reminder, I just realized I've not checked mine!!! And for any newbies, in my case, I've seen a HUGE improvement in my skin since I changed all my personal care products (soap, hair care, skin care, make-up, lotion, you name it) to gluten-soy/dairy free. I have rosacea and it is practually gone and I don't break out much anymore. My girlfriends have complimented me on it; I am able to not wear make-up all the time if I'm out for the first time in my adult life.

I was just in San Francisco where you can go to a Bare Escentuals store so I bought some stuff and I like it a lot. I got the powder foundation and a powder blush. If you go to www.sephora.com you can get a Bare Escentuals starter kit for $60. It comes with two shades of foundation, a mineral veil (which is like a clear powder that seals everyhing), a bronzer, three brushes and a video. It's worth it because alone all that stuff would cost you well over $100. A friend of mine just bought the kit and it's great. I feel like a Bare escentuals marketer but I really like the stuff so far and knowing it's gluten-free gives me a lot of piece of mind.

I also use Burt's Bee's concealer and lip shimmers. They're awesome and they taste like peppermint. Super cheap- like $3 a tube and they last a long time. Good stuff! Beverly

I have been considering switching to Bare Escentuals. However, when I looked them up, I'm a little confused on how to use the products b/c they seem different than "normal" makeup. Any helpful hints? Thanks. :)

I finally went out and bought some L'Oreal make-up. My local celiac association has a product list that says that all L'Oreal products are gluten-free. I had been using cover girl, but I'm not sure if they are safe. I couldn't find Bare Escentuals or some of the other products you guys were talking about, maybe some of them are just sold in the US. Thanks for your help! B)

Bare Essentials can be bought in San Francisco and I think in

Austin but you can buy them over the phone. I know you can get them on QVC check out the website. I just go e-mail other day about June 8th don't know what time though. I love this makeup, it cover up fine lines and looks real natural on skin and doesn't feel cakey like old foundation makeups.

Does anyone know if Bare Escentuals lipstick is gluten free? It has vitamin E in it, which I know can sometimes be derived from a non-gluten-free source, so I just wanted to make sure. I emailed them about it, but they didn't write me back.

Also, I see that some of their products (moisturizers, from the ingredients I saw) did have some form of wheat in them, but it seems that all of their makeup is gluten free, right?

Yes...it is just their makeup line that is gluten free...lipsticks and all. Some of the moisturizers do have wheat in them..I have not investigated their other products..I have just checked on their makeup line.

hmmmm, interesting...

That's what the list says that I have, meaning someone has called the company and L'Oreal apparently said all of their stuff was gluten free. Maybe it's just in Canada, since there are some differences between the US and Canada. I'll have to look into it though. However, the ingredients list seems to be safe.

Does anyone know if L'Oreal's gluten-free list includes their nail polishes? I read the list of ingredients and it looks OK, but I'm wondering if anyone can confirm.

I'm so sad because I LOVE OPI Nail Envy and it's not gluten-free. I guess I could just replace it with their clear nail polish as their nail polishes are. Thank God- I have like 10!

All Loreal makeup gluten free? That must be in Canada only? I called about Loreal makeup I had and they wouldn't guarantee it gluten free and the other thing had gluten so I know thats not true here.

I'm sorry, I was wrong about the Loreal makeup. I had given my product list to my grandmother and I thought it said all products by Loreal are gluten-free. But I just looked at it this morning and it says all Lipsticks by Loreal are gluten-free. My bad... Althought the foundation I got looks fine, no gluten or hidden gluten oppertunities in it as far as I could tell ;)

If she has over 10x that level, and you have celiac disease, I'm not sure if a biopsy is necessary to diagnose her. In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children!

      UPDATE:  here I am a couple months past my full diagnosis and going gluten free.  I’ve been feeling a lot better.  More energy, joint pain has gone down a lot.  Haven’t really had the headaches and migraines I’ve had for years.   My daughter(age 17) has had some symptoms which we thought were something else, but with my diagnosis I said,  have the dr test her for celiacs.  Her antibodies came back as greater then 100.  So she is scheduled for her endoscopy and going to be joining me on this journey.

Dinner varies like gluten-free pasta, tacos, chicken, sausage, meat etc. rice or take out from gluten-free places. I have decided to stay away from gluten-free pizza as I feel I felt weird with it unless its store bought frozen. I am going to try to make my own gluten-free bread, Bagels. I have been good with baking gluten-free treats like cookies, muffins. Snacks if its not fruit, veggies I grab a protein bar or chocolate guilty pleasure reeses, hersheys, York PP. I am going to start to use my fitness pal app to track what I eat and note when I feel off to see if I can pinpoint if a trend of a certain gluten-free food is a culprit. I noticed once in a while I feel a little bloated, gassy that I think is from the pizza so I am going to avoid it and continue narrowing it down. I have been doing very well and I have learned even if you think you are doing everything 100% gluten-free eating it can sneak in without you knowing. This year is more traveling which im afraid of but have already looked into gluten-free places in Nashville which they have and back to Aruba I went last year and have the gluten-free places already selected. Most restaurants I have been to have been very helpful with what to stay away from to avoid CC. If a place states they don't have any gluten-free the I stick with a salad or when I took my kids to breakfast as much as I miss the breakfast this place serves I played it safe with yogurt and a fruit bowl so at least my kids were happy to go there again. Local farmers market has great gluten-free items that I treat myself to like different types of breads, baked goods. My journey continues...
