Caramel Syrup

I know I've read that caramel coloring is usually off limits, but what about caramel syrup?

I have a new love, but I think it might be making me sick. :( Caramel Macchiatos (espresso, vanilla syrup, caramel syrup, and steamed milk - YUM!) I checked the ingredients on the syrups - the vanilla is ok, but the caramel says "natural caramel flavor".

Ok? Or no?

I've had two of these this week (I know, probably not the best choice) and while my stomach hasn't been upset or anything, I just feel a little off. But it could be because I'm only a few weeks into the diet too............

If you are in the States, caramel coloring is generally safe. It is usually made from corn; rarely from barley.

You could always double check with the company to be sure.

I know that the Macchiatos from Starbucks are gluten-free (and my favorite!!), and the Torani carmel syrup and sauce is gluten-free. If it's neither of these, you might call the company just in case. I had to switch to soy... :rolleyes:

In the US, caramel coloring is usually from corn.

Hmmm, I wonder if it was just too much sugar, or if it was something completely different that made me feel off then?

It wasn't from Starbucks, but another coffee company (the one I work for), and I have personally had my hands on the syrup products and read the labels, and didn't even see "caramel coloring" listed. (We only use Torani when we run out of Monin syrups and are waiting on shipments to come in).

The caramel syrup, however, is our company brand (not the Monin), so it might be a good idea for me to check with the company.

Thanks for your replies, everyone! I'll let you know what I find out!

      Thoughts? Non-endoscopic Celiac diagnosis in two year old

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong. yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      @GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

      hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352
