Can Someone Who Is Gluten Intolerant Have Itchy Scalp And Reactions From Shampoo And Hair Products?

I am just curious. I was using Biolage shampoo and conditioner for years. My scalp started to itch and flak, then I got sever eczema. Went to the dermatologist and she gave me this horrible chemcial to put on my scalp. I switched to Pantene, which has oats in it. I was fine at first, and then the same thing started all over again. Is it possible to be that sensative. I've checked all of my hair products (there are quite a few), and all have Hydrolized (sp?) wheat protein.

Help!

Yes I too get really itchy from shampoo's and conditioner's especially close the base of the back of my neck. I switched to Burt's Bee's color saver (all their shampoo's are gluten free, or will say if not) and that has helped.

I have a contact allergy with wheat and shampoos, cosmetics, etc. with wheat in them cause this to happen to me. There are quite a few people with gluten intolerance and celiac who experience similar things too. If you have DH you have to injest gluten but if you have some kind of contact allergy then it's entirely possible.

Pantene is gluten free and where did you get the idea it has oats in it. I react to oats on my skin and I have used Pantene for over 6 yrs now, no reaction!!!

Tell me which one has oats so I never get that one, please.

Hi, it's in a gold bottle for highlights called blonde expressions. Sorry I should have said that.

I use Desert Essence Organics Apple and Ginger Shampoo as well as their Conditioner. Both are gluten free. My hair stylist tells me my hair looks really healthy these days by the way. A far cry from when my hair was always falling out and my scalp a mess.

I avoid anything that has tocopherols in it unless they say they are gluten free or call it tocopherol acetate. It may be mixed tocopherols are OK but as yet I am uncertain about that since wheat germ is the basis for most tocopherol (i.e., vitamin E). Ditto with caramel coloring...I avoid it due to it having a barley base.

I noticed about a few months before getting D'xed that my scalp was always itchy or broke out in red, painful bumps. There are plently of gluten-free shampoos out there. Definitely ditch anything that has hyrdolized wheat protein in it. Also avoid wheat germ, germ, oats, and so on.

Ok, now that makes sense. I read somewhere a while back, Pantene for different hair colors, does contain gluten. I never use those. I usually use the one called Color Revival. Recently, I purchased the one called For Beautiful Lengths.

I am glad you posted this because many people get confused about an internal gluten reaction vs. a contact allergy. Gluten containing shampoo's will only cause an internal reaction if you drink the shampoo. If a person is having a topical reaction to shampoo, they are allergic to something in the shampoo and it may not just be wheat. It's a contact allergy.

Dina...I have used Biolage shampoo for years also and was diagnosed with celiac disease 3 1/2 years ago. I have continued to use Biolage and have no problems with it at all.

You are probably reacting to something in the shampoo and it may not be a wheat product either. I do not know if it is gluten free or not but sounds like you have a contact allergy.

I have this problem as well, I get very itchy skin if I use products with gluten in them. And if I continue using them I will also get brain fog, grumpy moods and irritable, if I am not eating it how does it get to my brain?!

Its my understanding that if you wash yourself or put on lotion on your body eventually some of that gets inside one since you scratch yourself, put fingers here and there, somehow fingers get in mouth or even more directly a strand of hair or you eat something with your fingers etc. Ditto with loved ones, you might kiss them etc. It can get in. So, if you are really sensitized, as many of us are, it becomes an issue... Certainly I have found by going off all gluten in my various shampoos and lotions and soaps etc. it has made a big difference... And when involved with a boyfriend I ask him to shampoo etc. with safe soaps...Ditto with toothpaste too of course and deadly mouthwash. Aloe vera is a good alternative by the way for men as an after-shave lotion.

Thank you ,it’s been a long road for me for having both now ,what upsets the most is that if they discovered that I also have cealiac earlier I would not have injested gluten if I was aware. Double whammy.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.
