Night Sweats

Prior to diagnoses 3 or 4 years ago I would wake every hour having to change my t-shirt or PJ top which was ringing wet with sweat. When celiac was confirmed and I went totally gluten-free, It stopped after the 3rd gluten-free day. A few weeks ago it started

happening again although not as bad. I only wake 2 or 3 times instead 7 or 8. Still I have to wonder if this is a sign of something else, perhaps a new allergy or intolerance to something. Doc's are pretty much clueless.

Any ideas?

Are you sure you're 100% gluten free?

Do you have any other symptoms?

I had night sweats due to Babesia (a Lyme Disease coinfection). They were drenching just like you describe. You can read the other Lyme symptoms on the Lyme Disease thread in the Leaky Gut forum.

The other thing could be something like mold exposure. I had a Sleep Number bed that was full of mold. That kind of mold can cause health problems, including night sweats. You might check out www.biotoxin.info for more info on what biotoxins can do.

Gluten can cause the biotoxins as well, so that could be the reason that the sweats stopped for a time when the gluten was removed from your diet. Then they came back when the other toxins built up. Just a theory.

Thanks much Carla

I'm sure the gluten-free is not an issue as I'm extremely sensitive and extremely careful. Mold on the other hand has been a huge problem for the past 3 months. Strange weather here in Kona combined with the volcano emissions has been affecting almost everyone. Did kill it in one room but have a few others to go. Didn't link the mold and sweats so this is a BIG help!

thanks again

Hi Ken, have you had your thyroid checked recently? Sometimes thyroid problems can cause sweating.

I get night sweats too randomly and I can't figure it out. Like you, my night sweats stopped when I went gluten free, but I'll have a few weeks where it will happen every night and then it goes away again. Evening primrose oil seems to help. Thanks for the post, I thought it was just me.

I get night sweats also, when I am glutened. I have a thyroid nodule and I think the sweats are caused by hyperthyroid reactions to the gluten. I get the sweats after eating also. I just started hypertension meds, but I don't know if high blood pressure has a possible relation or not.

thanks,

I had wondered if it was just me too. Its exactly the same with me.. a few weeks then nothing -- only this time

its been going on for a month stright so i'm beginning to wonder.

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.

I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50. US 2024 - Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster Infection in Patients with Celiac Disease 50 Years Old and Older Sweden 2018 - Increased risk of herpes zoster in patients with coeliac disease - nationwide cohort study
