Newbie Question - That Pong!

Hi All, sure this will have been discussed before and apologies if so. I've recently become gluten intolerant and after going gluten free most of my symptoms have improved, but the other day I made a mistake and ate something with gluten.

I find that incredibly smelly wind is back - but my problem is getting shot of 'that smell'.

Washing sheets and changing clothes, showering and using air fresheners and deoderants just doesn't seem to do the trick sufficiently. It clings and clings! I'm embarrassed to have people in the house as it seems to be everywhere and for days.

What do people do to get rid of it? I've heard about charcoal pads but for now it is too late as the 'cat is out of the bag'. Any advice greatly appreciated and thanks!!!!

You could try taking Chlorophyll each day. Health food stores sell it, or the Internet. You can get it in chewables. liquid or capsules. It really deodorizes everything, though you might have to pop a couple more during a glutening.

I work in a hotel, and when a room has an unexplainable, uneradicable smell, we put dryer sheets in the vents for a few days and shampoo the carpet. Is your weather fair enough to leave the windows open, at least while you're not home?

I haven't tried it but you can burn/use essential oils as air fresheners, germ killers, etc. I have read that lavendar is a good one to use. Please google it for more info. You may need a "carrier" to use with it and there are precautions if you get it on your skin. They are natural and healthy compared to the synthetic chemical filled air fresheners.

They are supposed to make you feel good like when you smell fresh flowers...mmm.

Oh, try burning coffee grounds in a pan on the stove.

I'm a newbie too -- I totally understand what you're saying! For laundry, I finally discovered BORAX -- 20 Mule Team -- it comes in a box -- use it as a laundry additive along with detergent. It takes that smell right out.

If I'm doing whites, I throw in some bleach too.

I use straightforward natural cleaning ingredients around the house now too -- white vinegar & warm water is pretty good. And burning a few candles that are naturally scented (essential oils type of thing) has helped me.

Good luck.

Some brilliant replies and sincere thanks to all of you. I haven't found Borax here in Slovenia but am going to a wedding in the U.K. next week so am hoping to have more luck there and chlorophyll might help clear me out. I'm using off prescription drugs at the moment for internal assistance called Yogermina and Bion3, I don't know what they are called in other countries.

After an 'attack' i sometimes feel the smell is coming out of every pore, sometimes for days - do others experience this?

Hope people will keep posting their thoughts and suggestions.

When my 'pong' is at its worst it is terribly embarrassing still.

What medication to people take to control their wind?

What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
