Ma Uno's Now Have gluten-free Pizza!

Uno's Pizzeria has finally delivered on their long awaited gluten-free pizza. I got an e-mail from them (see below) last week telling me that cheese and pepperoni gluten-free pizza is now on their gluten-free menu. My DD tried one on Saturday and loved it. Note that the e-mail states that these are only test items and won't necessarily be added to their standard menu. Perhaps a few e-mails would help to convince them!!

oh how exciting! now i have to find a reason to go to Vermont so i can try the pizza!

i noticed pizza is now listed on Uno's gluten-free online menu so i emailed them to confirm the locations it's available at - because after seeing it advertised on their menu i was curious if it had been rolled out nationwide already. this is the response i got:

We are testing this gluten free pizza in a limited area. We need to

make sure that the pizza is well received by our customers, that all

precautions are taken by our staff to prevent cross contamination. So

far the test is going very well and we hope to introduce the pizza in

the rest of our restaurants by the beginning of next year.

I just wanted to say that yesterday I hit the Uno's in Revere, MA on my way to the Celtics game (cause unfortunately Marco's is closed on Monday so I had to eat something before the game) and tried the gluten-free pizza. It was really really good. The dough was a big soggy/uncooked in places (possibly the grease/cheese mushing it more than it usually would be), but overall the cheese/sauce/dough blended nicely and had a real authenticate pizza taste to it. I was very impressed, so I hope the pizza gets good reviews by others and is there to stay :-) Hopefully other chain restaurants take note and start to make gluten-free versions of other popular dishes besides the typical steak/ribs/chicken/seafood choices we are mostly limited to now at places.

I too had the gluten-free pizza at the Uno's in Harvard Square yesterday. I didn't set my expectations too high as I've been let down many times before from lousy pizza crusts in the past. However, I was extremely pleased and impressed for being able to eat pizza in a chain restaurant!

The crust was thin and light with crispy edges, but perhaps just slightly underdone in the middle - could have remained in the oven for an extra 3-5 min. The crust didn't fall apart (I was able to fold the slices in half) and wasn't over-sauced. Generous portion too with zero cardboard taste! Now all they need to do is stock gluten-free brew! Highly recommended as a mainstream option!!!

I made a road trip to Concord NH and had the Gluten Free Pepperoni pizza on Saturday

I couldn't stop grinning the whole time....I was at a pizza place - eating a not-salad!

I thought it was pretty good, though they could have put more sauce on it (I am a sauce fiend)

It was so nice to be able to sit and watch (and smell) my spouse eating a deep dish Uno and NOT feel jealousy! I had my very own pie AND I ATE IT ALL! I left stuffed and licking my fingers.

So now it's 3 days later and I am pleased to report that I was definitely not glutened!

Good Job Uno's! They used to be my favorite place before I went gluten-free....and now they are back on my list!

This is fantabulous!!!!! I went to Flatbread Pizza because i wanted pizza and beer (they have Redbridge there...gluten-free). Wasn't a fan to be honest with you. Although I'm not setting my sites too high on Uno's.....I'm just excited that I have another menu option there now!!!

I had a side salad and the pepperoni pizza and loved my meal!

The pizza is as big as a huge dinner plate and I was quite full afterwards.

The servers found the menu immediately and knew about celiac disease and gluten-free food!

I'm very impressed!

i read it's coming to upstate NY (Albany/Saratoga area) in "early 2009" so maybe there's hope it'll extend south to LI too!

i'm going to Uno's in Burlington VT on Friday to try it...i'm so excited!

I had my birthday dinner last night at the Revere, MA Uno's and did not get sick.

The cheese is very yummy, the crust is thin and has a good flavor and the outside crust is a bit crunchy. The sauce is pretty good, almost close to the homemade marinara I put on my gluten-free pizza at home. I just use more garlic and herbs.

The salad at the Plymouth location was better, but I won't complain too much.

I guess the pizza is close to a well made Domino's thin crust cheese pizza with light sauce. At least this is what I remember them tasting like 4 years ago! :P

I'm liking the Uno's a lot. Two safe meals so far and my boyfriend has a huge menu to choose from (he can eat gluten), so he won't get too bored when I want to eat out!

ok, i just got back from Uno's in Burlington VT. we had to take a ferry from NY (which cost my boyfriend and i $25) to get to VT so once it was all said and done, including the meal, the entire trip cost us about $50.

i think i set my expectations too high for this pizza. don't get me wrong...it was definitely good but there are a few things i'd like to see done differently.

the pizza itself is pretty large for a personal size but the crust is thin so i didn't have a problem eating the whole thing myself. the rice crust was cooked perfectly but it seems to absorb most of the sauce so as a whole the pizza was a bit dry. i thought there could also be a lot more cheese so i'd probably ask for more sauce and cheese next time. (not sure if the pizza are pre-assembled/frozen or not so this might not be a possibility?)

overall i give the pizza an 8 out of 10. it was certainly edible and would be fantastic with a few minor changes. i hope they expand the availability to the rest of the country soon so everyone else can try it!! i'm going to email Uno's and let them know what i thought and i'll see what they have to say about expanding the pizza to other areas. i'll post their reply, if i get one.

One of the biggest things about eating gluten free is having a tough time stopping for quick bite to eat. We love Mexican food and that does the trick but it would be great to have some variety.

He said that could mean either "february or may of 2009, but it will be getting better." This same bar tender even said that he'd rather have the gluten-free pizza instead of one of their other flatbread pizzas. I seriously go there at least once a month as my "treat" to get 2 pizza's with hope that I have left overs the next day. Between my husband and I, there never is any left overs! Now I just need to hunt down Redbridge beer so I can have beer and pizza :D

Where in MA do you live Jami? I live in Seabrook, NH and all the grocery stores up here carry Redbridge now including of all places Wal-Mart. I drink hard liquor mostly so beer isn't a must or anything, but you'd be hard pressed to find my fridge without Redbridge in it lol, the stuff is so good, I honestly like it better than some of the beers I used to drink and that's no joke. Anyways, you can also look on the Redbridge site and they have a list of places in your area that carry it, although I found a few times for this not to be true. I think all the Kappy Liquors carry it from past experience in MA and there was a liquor store in Rowley that had it so I think it's pretty popular at least on the North Shore.

Checked with the Maple Shade, NJ Uno Grill (outside Philly) and a manager confirmed that they will start serving gluten-free pizza on Tuesday January 13, 2009.

I got lunch from the Uno's in Ellicott City, Maryland today and tried the cheese pizza. It was carry out so I asked the manager how I could be sure I had the right thing. He said that the manager supervises every gluten-free pizza being made and told me how they use designated utensils, etc. The gluten-free pizza is round whereas the flatbread pizza is more oval shaped.

The flavor was definitely good. The crust was a bit flaky and didn't want to stay together too well, but that was ok. I was eating a pizza that I didn't have to make! I will definitely have it again.

      There is much helpful 'truth' posted on this forum. Truths about Celiac Disease are based on scientific research and people's experience. Celiac disease is inherited. There are 2 main Celiac 'genes' but they are variations of one gene called HLa - DQ What is inherited when a person inherits one or both of the DQ2 or the DQ8 is a predisposition to develop celiac disease after exposure to a environmental trigger. These 2 versions of the DQ gene are useful in diagnosing  celiac disease but there are about 25 other genes that are known to influence celiac disease so this food intolerance is a multigenic autoimmune disease. So with so many genes involved and each person inheriting a different array of these other genes one person's symptoms may be different than another's symptoms.  so many of these other genes.  I don't think that much research on these other genes as yet. So first I wrote something that seem to tie together celiac disease and migraines.  Then you posted that you had migraines and since you went gluten free they only come back when you are glutened. Then Scott showed an article that reported no connection between migraines and celiac disease, Then Trents wrote that it was possible that celiacs had more migraines  and some believed there was a causal effect. You are each telling the truth as you know it or experienced it.

      Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

      Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better

      @Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."

      As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.
