Hello everyone.

Still so new at this. Darin was diagnosed 11/4/08, after many, many, many doctor visits and finally some blood work and colonoscopy/EGD was diagnosed with gluten intolerance. His main symptoms prior to this was a dull, right, lower quadrant pain (only sometimes sharp - GI Dr. was thinking Crohn's but ended up not being), diarrhea, and inability to gain weight. I have completely taken the gluten out, gone through everything in the house.....even topical stuff. I am doing it with him, so CC isn't an issue.

The bowel movements are better so far....kind of mixed, but better. Of course weight gain is too soon to tell. But his pain in the lower right quadrant since the colonoscopy is A LOT worse....sharp and stabbing with the dull pain background. We have talked to both his PCP and the GI several times, and none seem worried about the worsening pain there.

The thing that concerns me is that his GI stated that where the pain is is not explained by the Celiac's. But then he hasn't been too helpful overall......he walked off and only said "he can have corn and rice, corn and rice".

Anyone else have these symptoms or ideas?

The results from the colonoscopy and EGD were perfect of than the Celiac's on the biopsy btw.

they don't know everything,

the pain could be from celiac, it could not be.

I had pain in my lower intestine when I ate gluten and a friend of mine gets pain in her lower intestine whenever she cheats(I try to convince her not to).

have they checked his appendix?

Is your son still on dairy? If so, it might be a good idea to remove it from his diet--for a few months--and see if the symptoms improve. The tips of the villi where dairy is digested have been injured, and some Celiacs become temporarily lactose intolerant. Most of the time it reverses when the person has healed.

I get lower right quadrant pain when I eat something that I'm intolerant to, besides gluten. Soy and corn give some of us problems, too, but I'd start with the dairy and see if that helps.

They did check his appendix and it looked great. Labs are completely normal too.

He is still eating dairy.....I may have to take that away for a while!

A very long shot in a child but ultrasound for gal bladder? If not, give him some time. He may just need to heal.

Either way, I hope he feels better soon!

If he just needs to heal, a warm water bottle or a heating pad with a towel wrapped around it can be very soothing. I have an appendectomy scar that has some scar tissue attached to my bowel. I can get sharp pains there if I have gas. The heating pad makes it feel so much better.

hehe....he is my fiance by the way ;)

He did have an ultrasound, he is very skinny so they were able to see all his organs perfectly. No hernias, appendix was tiny, and gallbladder looked perfect.

I will try the heat pad......

of note......he is overall feeling better other than his side :D Normal bowel habits for the first time in many years!!! (sorry I just have to tell some people who would understand! ;) )

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

      hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
