Having A Tough Time

Varjak Newbie

Hi guys, I'm new, and known I was celiac for about a year now. Things have been okay for the most part aside from the occasional gluten mishap, but in the past 5 or 6 days I have been feeling sick more. It seems I feel sick whenever I eat, even "gluten free" items, and so I have restricted my diet to the things that are specifically labeled Gluten Free. Still I'm feeling sick. It's very frustrating, I want to feel better but I keep getting stomach aches, D, nauseousness, etc... I just want to hang out with my friends but always worry I will get sick, as the sick feelings tend to come out of nowhere and flare up very fast. I find myself looking at other people and envying their ability to do what they want when they want, I don't want to fly, or have super strength, I just want to feel better and be able to live normally. Also besides the regular celiac symptoms I have been dizzy, cold, and not able to think straight very well. However this may be because a flu is going around and that is whats causing the increase in my feeling sick. The bottom line is I just want to feel better, be able to socialize with my friends, and work at my job without constant worry about getting sick. Thanks for letting me vent!

I am sorry you are feeling so iccky. There are a couple of things to look into. Has anything changed in the last week or so? Have you started using a new shampoo or lotion? Have you done any home improvement projects? Started any crafts? Did you get a refill on a script that has been gluten free and the pharmacist didn't check it? This is a bigger risk with generics as they can change formulas at will. Do you routinely consume high risk products like items off the Lay's gluten-free list (hint most are not really gluten free)? You could of course simply have a virus but there are a lot of ways that gluten can sneak in and there are things that some celiacs tolerate, like gluten grain vinegars and alcohols that others of us react strongly to. I hope you feel better soon.

Hey Varjak. It is very frustrating. It's hard to know what to attribute to Celiac, and what is not. I guess time will tell if it's flu or some virus. In the meantime it a good idea to check every label of everything you're using. Even things that were safe before doesn't mean that they are still safe. More frustration! At any rate, I hope you feel better soon.

I had a bug this fall that I was sure was a new food sensitivity. No, just the flu. It did linger and act like a glutening though. I just had to eat simply until it passed, about two weeks.

I would also think about whether you've started any supplements or meds that are a new package or new to you. I believe someone else found most of their meds had a lactose coating and they were sensitive to dairy. My friend's DS is having an allergic reaction and she brought me his acne medicine and body wash. Acne had lactose and the body wash had oats. This stuff can be sneaky and we really have to be detectives sometimes.

I hope everything heals for you very soon. Let us know how you do.

A lot of "gluten free" foods make me sick. I need to stick to ones made in a dedicated facility. I think others get tiny, or not so tiny amounts of gluten in them from cross contamination. See the posts about Wellshire farms gluten free foods. That could explain your problems. Each new food I look up here first to see if anyone else has complained about it. Then I try to make sure that I only try one new thing each few days, so that if I do get sick, I know what caused it. Be really careful about foods whose label states that they are processed in a facility that also processes wheat. Those are a sure thing to make me sick. Then if I get sick I need to wait a week or two before trying anything new again.

Definitely get vitamin D 25(OH)D.  Celiac Disease causes vitamin D deficiency and one of the functions of vitamin D is modulating the genes.  While we can survive with low vitamin D as an adaptation to living in a seasonal environment, the homeostasis is 200 nmol/L.  Vitamin D Receptors are found in nearly every cell with a nucleus, while the highest concentrations are in tissues like the intestine, kidney, parathyroid, and bone.  A cellular communication system, if you will. The vitamin D receptor: contemporary genomic approaches reveal new basic and translational insights  Possible Root Causes of Histamine Intolerance. "Low levels of certain nutrients like copper, Vitamins A, B6, and C can lead to histamine build up along with excess or deficient levels of iron. Iodine also plays a crucial role in histamine regulation."

I forgot to mention my suspicion of the high amount of glyphosate allowed to be used on wheat in USA and NZ and Australia. My weight was 69kg mid-2023, I went down to 60kg in March 2024 and now hover around 63kg (just after winter here in NZ) - wheat-free and very low alcohol consumption.

Hi Jess Thanks so much for your response and apologies for the long delay in answering. I think I must have been waiting for something to happen before I replied and unfortunately it fell off the radar... I have had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy in the meantime (which revealed 'minor' issues only). Yes I do think histamine intolerance is one of the problems. I have been lowering my histamine intake and feeling a lot better. And I do think it is the liver which is giving the pain. I am currently taking zinc (I have had three low zinc tests now), magnesium, B complex, vitamin E and a calcium/Vitamin C mix. I consciously think about getting vitamin D outside. (Maybe I should have my vitamin D re-tested now...) I am still 100% gluten-free. My current thoughts on the cause of the problems is some, if not all, of the following: Genetically low zinc uptake, lack of vitamin D, wine drinking (alcohol/sulphites), covid, immune depletion, gastroparesis, dysbiosis, leaky gut, inability to process certain foods I am so much better than late 2023 so feel very positive 🙂

Hi and thank you very much for your detailed response! I am so glad that the protocol worked so well for you and helped you to get your health back on track. I've heard of it helping other people too. One question I have is how did you maintain your weight on this diet? I really rely on nuts and rice to keep me at a steady weight because I tend to lose weight quickly and am having a hard time envisioning how to make it work, especially when not being able to eat things like nuts and avocados. In case you have any input, woud be great to hear it! Friendly greetings.

I was not taking any medications previous to this. I was a healthy 49 yo with some mild stomach discomfort. I noticed the onset of tinnitus earlier this year and I had Covid at the end of June. My first ‘flare-up’ with these symptoms was in August and I was eating gluten like normal. I had another flare-up in September and then got an upper endo at the end of September that showed possible celiac. My blood test came a week later. While I didn’t stop eating gluten before I had the blood test, I had cut back on food and gluten both. I had a flare-up with this symptoms after one week of gluten free but wasn’t being crazy careful. Then I had another flare-up this week. I think it might have been caused by Trader Joe’s baked tofu which I didn’t realize had wheat. But I don’t know if these flare-ups are caused by gluten or if there’s something else going on. I am food journaling and tracking all symptoms. I have lost 7 pounds in the last 10 days.
