Popovers On The Sqare - Portsmouth, Nh

Hello all,

I just wanted to post about yet another new option in the Seacoast, NH/Boston area for you Celiacs out there. Last night I finally made it to Popovers on the Square in downtown Portsmouth (it is a block below Market Sq. on the main drag to downtown), and let me tell you I was not dissapointed. It is a sandwhich/pastry shop and they have some kind of Millet gluten-free bread which was phenomonal (lightly toasted which undoubtly helped.) Probably the best sliced/sandwhich gluten-free bread I have tried yet. They have salads and chowders/soups as well as sandwhiches, but I don't know exactly what of those they can make gluten-free. It appeared the cashier knew the clam chowder that night was gluten-free (made with a rice flour) but when she asked other people working there about the tomato bisk she couldn't get a straight answer, so that was of a little concern. They also have gluten-free desserts such as flourless mousse cake/pie (whatever it's called) and macaroons.

The sandwhich options are pretty limited, you can't simply ask for an Italian or something, you have to pick off their list. I am a very picky eating who is slowly but surely broadening his horizons since being diagnosed and I finally decided to try the Cuban Pork which was shoulder pork, country ham and some chipolte sauce mix, it was excellent.

Here's a list of the other options they had, I do wish though you could order your sandwhich with whatever mix of meats you wanted.

B.L.T. on Honey Wheat

with Swiss Cheese

Roasted turkey Rueben Panini

on Marble Rye

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
