I"ve had celiac for about 7 years. Is it common to get cancer if I don't smoke? I am afraid of cancer. I was having some stomach problems, but started on enzymes and other stuff that's helped. I don't think I've been getting any gluten, but I never got symptoms before so it's hard for me to tell if I get gluten or not. But I eat basically potatoes, fruits, veggies, nuts and some meat.

If you can relieve me that it's not cancer, I can handle most anything.

My pain was upper right area. I get elevated liver enzymes from time to time, so not sure if this is it or not.

I am in my 40's. For the first time, I had a little vaginal spotting and it was after my period ended.

I don't have any medical insurance right now, so going to the doctor is not something I can do at this time.

If you really think it might be cancer you should go to your local county hospital to get it checked out. My belief is that they would help you and it wouldn't cost you very much if you don't make or have much money.

Meanwhile, slippery elm and marshmallow root soothe and help heal the villi and take down inflammation in the intestines. Dandelion root will help out your liver plus help with the release of bile which in turn helps out with peristalsis and digestion. Acidophilus is really important, especially the enterically coated kind.

Eating more cooked vegetables (avoid raw ones until you feel better) and avoiding fried fats will help a lot. Meat is good but not in excess. Small amounts are better. Root vegetables and whole grains (sans gluten) are best for carbs while you feel like this. Avoid ground up flours for the time being and the things made with them. Also avoid sugar(s).

Hopefully you are avoiding all cross contamination and trace glutens?

Potatoes, tomatoes and green peppers can be an irritant for some. They were for me.

On the bright side, the longer you avoid the gluten completely, the less likely it is you will get cancer.

Thank you so much for the info. Do you know anyone who got cancer from Celiac or is it rare? I never get it at home. The only place could be at a restaurant from their dressing, but I hardly ever go out. I do lick envelopes every now and then. How much is enough to cause damage. Do you know? I appreciate you taking time with me.

Glad to be of help. I know how confusing it can be, especially at first.

I actually started to get pre cancerous warts as a young adult before I figured out I was "allergic" to wheat, rye and oats. I rarely had barley. It wasn't til much later that I found out I had celiac and even later than that realized that I needed to go off all trace glutens. But nevertheless, just by going off those things overall as a young adult, my flat warts went away--plus I took detox herbs like dandelion root which helped out too, I am pretty certain.

A friend of a friend of mine is dying from cancer. It turns out she too has celiac, but it seems she did not realize it in time... It is very sad, especially since she is a nurse of all things!

They say that if you aren't off all gluten and you have celiac your chances of getting cancer are much higher than average. However if you are off of it, your chances of getting cancer as well as other degenerative and autoimmune diseases are greatly reduced, plus its likely you will live longer than average. In addition its unlikely you will get stiff joints.

You should look at some of those books out there on the subject. I liked reading DANGEROUS GRAINS by Braly and Hogan. You can get a good price online if you shop around and get used copies.

I recently heard that most envelopes use a corn based glue. How true this is I don't know. I use a piece of wet paper towel when I moisten envelopes to glue and send just because I don't want to take the chance of getting CC (cross contamination).

Its hard to avoid CC at restaurants. There are certain places that do have a gluten free menu and prepare their food carefully with separate pots etc. and wash their hands after handling glutenous items like PF Chang's and Outback. However most restaurants don't do that - and even there at PF's for instance its best to ask and remind them. At most restaurants you have to be willing to go in there and talk with the cook etc. to get them to change their habits for you. I have had some luck at Thai restaurants. I bring my own gluten-free soy sauce. Its best to go when they aren't too busy...

I have even gotten CC from shaking someone's hand after they ate a donut and have had problems with CC after kissing a boyfriend who likes his whiskey. This is socially embarrassing but there it is. If the boyfriend actually cares he won't do it or will wash his hands and brush his teeth first.

I am thinking of wearing gloves which I can later wash if I am in a public setting and have to shake a lot of people's hands, and then take them off if I am going to eat or drink something... I have started to wash my hands a lot more, which seems to help...

Despite the fact that being clear off all glutens making me a lot more sensitive and reactive to trace amounts, it is in my opinion way worth it since I overall feel so much better. My joints no longer hurt and I no longer get these colds and flues that last months longer than anyone else. I seem to not get ill at all except for the occasional CC problem of D or a migraine or some such. It lasts a day or two usually at most except for one time this last fall when my youngest brother made several pies for Thanksgiving and I breathed in the dust. I was achey and miserable for three weeks!

After I am glutened, the detox herbs help plus the marshmallow root etc. as well as acidophilus. Though while healing overall from celiac, I think its best to just take them now and then fairly regularly.

Echinacea and later on, as one gets better, cleavers also help clean out the lymphatic system which often gets clogged up after a CC episode.

When taking herbs just be sure not to use tinctures since they are usually made with grain alcohol. Ditto with liquid homeopathics!

Saunas and exercise really help too by the way.

If you don't have medical insurance check with your local social services as soon as you can. You may qualify for medical assistance and you don't have to apply for total services in some cases you can just apply for Medicaid. there are also real low cost insurance plans available through some states so check it out.

Have you checked all your scripts, supplements, toiletries, shampoos, lotions, makeup etc for gluten content? You may have some CC slipping in there.

When you get this pain have you ever tried taking some Pepto Bismal to see if it stops it? If it helps that would at least let you know it is stomach related.

If you are losing weight, running a fever, have seen changes in the color the whites of your eyes or are having night sweats please get to a doctor as soon as you can to get checked out.

by the way, I am on most all of those vitamins and then some. The cheapest site I've found for all my vitamins is www.viteaminz.com

just in case any of you need some of the ones that are recommended.

the daily digestive enzymes by source naturals and the manuka honey have been literal lifesavers. I also do mastic gum and probiotics.

I am feeling MUCH better!

What is PF restaurant?

This is PF Changs which is one of the only restaurants I will eat food from. If you have one in your area do give it a try.

What lotions, shampoos, etc do you use on a regular basis that is gluten-free?

Suave and Dove will label gluten ingredients for one example. My personal favorite is from NutriBiotic. It is castile based and is free of both gluten and soy. I use the 'Fresh Fruit' Skin Cleanser from head to toe. It works well even as a shampoo for me.

I think you were asking me and referring to my signature. So I'll answer.

No one knows for sure why his liver was attacked. The doctor said after the autopsy that it was likely selfdestructing since birth. There is a correlation between liver issues and celiac but he passed long before he could be tested. He had a lot of the issues I had but didn't have DH and it strongly suspected that he was also celiac. My Mom was without a doubt and there is reason to suspect that my Dad was also. That would make sense since I have 2 copies of the same gene. Celiac being autoimmune it can be a causative or coincidental companion to other autoimmune disease.

According to Dr. Peter Green, autoimmune liver disease is so closely associated to Celiac that ANY person diagnosed with autoimmune liver problems should

be screened for celiac disease. Many Celiacs, including myself, had elevated liver enzymes before going gluten-free.

I also have 2 copies of DQ2 and BOTH my parents show very strong symptoms of celiac disease. It's just too bad they choose to ignore them. :unsure:

I had elevated liver enzymes when I was diagnosed and my enzymes go up when I'm glutened. That was able to be documented last summer when I was eating traces of gluten unknowingly. My antibody levels did not elevate, but I had symptoms and my liver enzymes shot up.

There was extensive testing and my GI feels that my liver is affected by the Celiac and concluded that the liver episode was "sprue related".

When did your brother first find out he had liver problems?

They found mine about 15 years ago. My enzymes go up and then back to normal and this has been going on for years. What about your brother?

      Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.

      @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

      No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

      @Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test.       I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played
