Never Had Diarrhea As Symptom

It seems as though nearly everyone I've read about with Celiac or gluten intolerance had the main symptom of diarrhea.

Well, I had other digestive symptoms, but never diarrhea. It was more like feeling constantly bloated, like i had to "fart" and actually seeing a gas bubble move through my intestines! But, it would never come out. Also, severe cramping and nausea.

Also had/have excema, tooth and gum problems along with other issues.

I've been gluten free for 9 days now and haven't had ANY issues with my GI tract!! :)

Anyone else NOT have diarrhea as symptom, but similar to what i described?

I had no real gut issues other than a constantly rumbling tummy and occasional constipation and gas for the first 30 years that I had celiac. I had many other systems that were heavily effected from childhood. The worst was the brain impact but also problems with teeth and skin as well as muscles and joints. When the real gut stuff hit it hit with a vengance, but it still took another 15 years to diagnose me.

Thanks for your reply!! Yes, when my symptoms started they were strong and undeniable. For me though, it only took 2 years, a relatively short amount of time, to be diagnosed.

Weird story-

2 years ago I became lethargic, barely able to get out of bed, lost my period, achy joints, low grade fever and sore throat so bad i went to urgent care thinking it was strep. I went to the dr. several times in a month having blood tests done. Not strep, not flu, not mono. Finally they said I had Lyme disease. They gave me SUPER strong antibiotics and sent me on my way.

Well, I had no tell-tale rash anywhere and it was March in Wisconsin. No tick is gonna be around in March-in Wisconsin. Temps are still in the 40s. But, I was like, ok.....maybe the rash was tiny and had already disappeared.

Anyway, about a year later a nurse from the state health department called and said that my results were studied and sent to an epidemiologist. They concluded I never had Lyme disease and they don't know what it was.

I'm wondering if it was Celiac-related. The symptoms lasted for about 6 months and then I felt about 80% better.

With both happening in the same time frame I wouldn't be surprised if they might be related somehow but of course there is no knowing for sure.

The fact that you are responding well to the diet is great. I hope things continue to go well.

Wow! I wonder how many of us have been treated for Lyme's? I did have a bite (might not have been a tick) after staying in a dog friendly motel when traveling, a week later I was sick. I had been to doctors with nothing being dianosed, it seemed smart to be treated for Lyme's. Two tests were both negative. Was sick with symptoms for about 6 weeks, then I too got better, then a couple months later, it hit full force. A neighbor suggested celiac as her husband had been diagnosed. His symptoms were so different than mine. He had D, I did not. Now, if I get glutened, I get D.

same here, chronic C for most of my adult life, worse since my daughter was born 7 years ago. now I get D when I have gluten but it happens about 24 h after the contamination. (bit TMI but honestly, after being C for the past 7 years the D is almost a relief, I never realized HOW bloated I was until the D hit)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.
