My Son's One Year Anniversary!

My son has had Celiac Disease for one year. This time last year I was a hysterical mother thinking this was the end. I remember the exact moment his doctor called me to tell me it was Celiac (I was at work - not the best place to receive that news). I had never even heard of Celiac. But, I went home that day and threw out all gluten containing food in my house (not a good thing to do before a biopsy- but I didn't know then). My son was a sickly, 42 pound 8 year old and I finally knew what was wrong with him.

My son has gained 10 pounds, grown 3 inches, and now is a strong and healthy 9 year old. His Celiac diagnosis was the best thing to ever happen to our family. One year ago I had never heard of Celiac Disease. Now I am extremely outspoken about the disease. Wow! What a difference a year makes.

Coongrats AmyLeigh! I understand how you feel....tomorrow will be one year gluten free for my DD. She has gained 6 pounds and grown 2.5 inches. Now at 3.5 yrs old she's up to 27 pounds, still a peanut, but so much better than a year ago. Family and friends constantly comment on how great she looks....no more sunken eyes, her hair is shiny again, and it makes me feel so good to see her want to eat. I remember being so overwhelmed this time last year, and now it all comes so naturally. Thanks to all on this board who have been so helpful this past year and the month before she went gluten free when we weren't sure of her diagnosis. You truly helped me get through a very tough time!

Happy 1 year anniversary! We celebrate this in our house almost like a birthday with cake and an amazing delicious gluten free dinner... its always great to celebrate being healthy!

Contrats on 1 year gluten-free with your son! It's amazing that we could be so afraid and it turns out so good. I am so glad your son was diagnosed and things have turned out so well. You have been such a great help to me and my daughters already too, so I thank you too! We still have a ways to go until 1 year. I look forward to posting how many things have changed and improved!

Yay!! What a great milestone. We are onlly at 8 weeks but I see so many great changes that I can't wait to see what a year brings!! Congrats to your family :D

We recently celebrated our 1 year anniversary as well. It so amazing what a difference a year makes! My son grew 4 inches and gained 4 pounds and I was thrilled with that. 10 pounds is amazing!! (I know, dieters all over the world would be groaning right about now listening to us gush over weight gain!)

We too have found the diagnosis of Celiac to be a reason to celebrate. Sure there are issues and hiccups, but overall it's had more positives than negatives!

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
