Alternative Grains Cause You Trouble?

Hi,

I've been on the gluten-free diet for about 10 days (third time as was on gluten challenge for testing) before I made some fruit bars using milet flakes and quinoa grains. I seemed to have similar reaction to getting glutenned and it took a few days to recover. To check if the bars were in fact the cause (recipe from a gluten-free cook book) I tried some again a few days later and had another GI reaction. :(

Is this something that is common? I susppose it may be a contamination issue and in fact the quinoa packaging does not claim it to be gluten-free (the millet flakes packaging does). Any ideas?

Initially, after going gluten-free some people cannot tolerate grains at all. My guess is that the structure of molecules is very similar and since your body is still on "high alert" it thinks these gluten free grains actually contain gluten.

One other thing to think about is the fact that most gluten free grains (minus oats) contain mostly insoluble fiber which is very rough on the GI tract. If you're having trouble with quinoa and millet, just stick with rice for a while and see how that goes. Or if you have to just avoid all grains as much as possible for a while and slowly reintroduce them back into your diet.

What were the other ingredients in your bars? You said fruit which I had a very hard time with in the beginning. What else was in them?

Some fruits actually harder on the system than others. If you are going to eat apples, take of the skin. Bananas should be ok and most other fruits, just take off the skin.

Also, make sure to eat fruits first before anything else since they digest so quickly and wait 20 minutes before eating anything else.

There was a mixture of: dried cranberries, raisins, sunflower, pumpkin, linseed and sesame seeds. dairy free margarine, sugar, golden syrup and eggs. I am ok with eggs otherwise and the seeds or fruit weer not something I supsected?

      @klmgarland, My dermatitis herpetiformis didn't clear up until I became meticulous about cross contamination. I cut out gluten-free oats and all gluten-free foods, dairy and gluten-free rice. Additionally, getting the right amount of protein for my body weight helped significantly in my body's healing process ... along with supplementing with enough of all the vitamins and minerals ... especially Zinc and Magnesium. I went from 70kg to 82kg in a year. Protein with each meal 3 times daily, especially eggs at breakfast made the difference. I'm not sure whether iodine was a problem for me, but I can tolerate iodine no problem now. I'm off Dapsone and feel great. Not a sign of an itch. So there is hope. I'm not advocating for the use of Dapsone, but it can bring a huge amount of relief despite it's effect on red blood cells. The itch is so distracting and debilitating. I tried many times to get off it, it wasn't until I implemented the changes above and was consistent that I got off it. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

      Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!

You are not failing; you are fighting an incredibly steep battle. For a more specific direction, connecting with a dedicated celiac support group (online or locally) can be invaluable, as members exchange the most current, real-world tips for avoiding cross-contamination that you simply won't find in a pamphlet. You have already done the hardest part by getting a correct diagnosis. Now, the community can help you navigate the rest. If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people.
