Ians Sweet Potato Fries

I bought some Ian's sweet potato fries the other day and figured they would be fine since the only two ingredients listed were sweet potatoes and oil. I thought I'd email the company just in case, since they normally label things that are gluten free...Their response is that it is not gluten free because the fries are dusted with flour!! How is it ok for them to use an ingredient and not list it like that?! Especially one like flour that so many people are intolerant and allergic to.

Very frustrating!! Anyway, heads up to anyone else who may have thought they were safe.

Thanks for posting this. Actually they shouldn't be able to get away with it but the lax rules for labeling in this country let them because it is not an ingredient but just used in processing. We really need to flood the FDA with the labeling issues in the hope that things may change one day.

Thank you for posting this. How terrible that they can include wheat and not put it on the label.

Thank you for posting this! I was JUST at the grocery store with a friend, and she bought some of these to take home. If you hadn't posted, I probably would have shared some with her later! It's not a problem for her, so no harm done, I guess. I'm glad you posted.

How many companies are still doing this, using flour in manufacturing and not listing it as an ingredient? That's really scary.

That's crazy. It makes me not trust companies that practice that sort of false labeling. Out of curiousity, I got on their website to see if it said anything. In the section that has their alphabet tater tots and the sweet potato fries this is what's written ...

Ian's fries are a satisfying, healthy compliment to meals that your whole family will love. Looking for a great alternative to traditional potato fries? Try Ian's Sweet Potato Fries! For a yummy allergen-free option, try Ian's Alphatots.

It seems like a CYA comment, but the fact still remians that they've used an ingredient that they didn't report.

Thanks for posting that!

Wow that's not good at all, especially at my local grocery store they have them labeled as gluten-free in the freezer even though it doesn't say it on the bag. I should tell them that these are not safe.

So I emailed them back to tell them that they really should fix their labels, and here is the response...looks like there was just a miscommunication! Sorry for the confusion :)

We have recently created a new recipe for our Sweet Potato Fries and those are the ones I thought you were referring to. As I said they are dusted with flour and the ingredients read

For what it's worth, I bought some frozen Mashed Sweet Potatoes at a regular grocery store today, put out by Ore-Ida I think, and it's marked Gluten-Free on the package. :)

It's good to know that Ian's isn't quite so far out as to neglect to label a flour-dusted french fry as containing wheat. But why would they dust them with flour anyway? What a dumb idea.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
