Hi everybody,

I am new to this forum. First, I wish all you who have been affected with Celiac find the way to a good health. My case is this: I had a intestinal biopsia last week. The result isn't ready yet but I listened to my intestinal villi is atrophied. I have to see my dr in one more month. I don't know if what I have is Celiac yet. My question is Should I avoid gluten from my diet since now or it is good advice to keep it until more tests been run? I don't feel good, and I see food totally undigested in my stool. Thanks for any help.

If you are planning on having more tests then you need to eat gluten. If you go off, then the test may be wrong.

Hi George,

There are some antibody blood tests that don't work if you are off gluten for very long.. They are best done when you still on gluten. If you want to do those your doc just needs to draw some blood and send it to a lab for testing. There are some other conditions that can cause villi blunting, so the antibody tests are not a bad idea, just to be sure. The usual progression is the antibody tests first and then the endoscopy.

Then again, if you go off gluten now and you start feeling better, that is a pretty darn good test too! You just need to decide if the testing is important to you.

Dairy is another problem food for some celiacs, So you might be reacting to that also. Have you thought about eliminating dairy? Villi blunting impacts the production of lactase enzyme, which digests dairy sugar (lactose). You might feel a bit better getting off dairy if it is a problem.

One thing to check on is the biopsy. Some people have posted saying they had the biopsy done but the GI only took 1 sample and didn't find celiac. Most of the time people say a multi-sample biopsy from different areas is better. It seems the celiac damage is patchy sometimes and a sample from a good patch wouldn't show the effects. So multiple samples are more likely to work in that case. I suggest checking on this now, rather than waiting a month. If the GI didn't take multiple samples, they may not find anything. It sounds like you heard them say something about atrophy though?

I think it makes sense to talk to the doc and ask if you can go off gluten now. Maybe they already drew blood for the antibody tests?

      I was diagnosed at 6 after having severe stomach pain after eating white bread or any kind of gluten my sister had one done aswell I was scared for the biopsy but thats bc the gas mask thing but now that I am a 14yr old female struggling with severe chronic pain making my body ache for no reason making it hard to sleep and do the things I love like playing spot which I love to do but I can sometimes not even be able to walk bc my knees hurt so bad I can or my hips or back the only think I wish for is to be a normal kid which I can't even be and I get accused of faking pain bc there is no physical things to notice especially at school when one day it will be so sore im limping the next im walking perfectly fine idk if its all from celiac disease but im the only one in my family that has this problem

      I noticed eating gluten-free or CGF foods have higher sugar and sodium some. No added sugar protein bars I found better with plant fiber. I wanted to know what are you go to besides whole fruits/veggies that you find are healthy for you where you can feel eating normal without hurting yourself or health. I was looking into subscription based like Thrift to see if there is something that is healthier CGF that can make me feel normal. Thanks

      Thankyou because I met up with K B with well known bay area hospital once and she said she knows I don't like to take meds, I said thats incorrect, I have issues.Thats the one that said I was deemed " unruly " when she admitted I was celiac when I asked why am I going through this.

      Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.
