I went on the Frito Lay website to see if my favorite brand of Doritos were gluten free. (I am only gluten free for 2 weeks) The website said they are gluten free and lactose free! I was SO SO happy! I asked my sister in law to pick me up two bags at the grocery store. When I went to open the bag it says that it contains soy and wheat! Then of course I questioned myself. I went back to the Frito Lay website to double check. THEY ARE LISTED GLUTEN FREE AND LACTOSE FREE! I wanted to call and complain but it was past business hours. They will receive a phone call from me on Monday! DORITOS

I totally understand your frustration, especially because you're new at this, and I don't blame you for wanting to give Frito Lay an earful. I think it is probably not a bad idea to call and give them some constructive feedback once the initial anger has subsided, but it is probably a blessing that they're closed for the weekend. Remember, not many companies are nice enough to provide lists of their gluten-free items, and this is EXACTLY the reason -- it's too hard to make sure that the product on the list is always identical to the product on the shelf. Formulations change. Are the bags you got old, and the list is up-to-date? Maybe next time you go to the store, the chips in question won't contain wheat. Or are the bags you got a new formulation and the list online is out-of-date? If the folks at Frito Lay get too many complaints about their "list" not matching the ingredients on the package, they will probably stop publishing a list at all. Many companies find it too cumbersome and too much of a liability and then all we get is "CYA" answers (no answers at all) when we call and ask for information.

A gluten-free list is never a substitute for reading labels on individual packages. But it is a nice place to start, so we don't have to bother reading the label on every dang thing in the grocery store in order to find the one thing we can eat. I would personally rather see an imperfect list published than no list at all. It narrows down the search, even though it always has to be double-checked.

Just food for thought (gluten-free food, of course). And welcome to the Gluten-Free world! By the way, all flavors of Frito Lay STAXX are Gluten-Free (which is especially nice because Pringles contain WHEAT).

What exactly did it say on the bag?

There is a difference between wheat as an intentional ingredient, and a disclaimer about shared facilities. Frito makes most of their products in facilities that make multiple products. A message that a product "may contain traces of wheat" is a shared facility disclosure statement.

I do hope you like a few other kinds of Doritos, as some of them are gluten free. I've replaced the standard Nacho chip (not gluten-free) with their Tacos at Midnight (a new flavor), which is gluten-free.

Just as a warning after reading a few posts on this forum....

Cool Ranch Doritos do not explicity state that they contain wheat... However, if you read their ingredient listing, they do contain monosodium glutamate.... the hidden gluten!!!! Be Wary!!!

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) does not contain gluten.

This is a controversial ingredient, and many people avoid it, but it is not something that celiacs need to fear as a gluten source.

Cool Ranch Doritos are OK and a staple at our house . . . that's probably not good, eh? MSG is OK gluten-wise . . . but some people (Celiacs and NON-Celiacs) react to MSG.

If you are looking for a Nacho Cheese Dorito-Type Chip, the Krogers brand of Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips are OK.

Never go by what it says on a website. Read every label every time. Manufacturers change ingredients all the time. Sorry.

MSG does NOT contain gluten. Period.
