Could All My Symptoms Be From Celiac?

:) Hi, I just joined this forum though I'v looked at it a few times before. Im not sure if this is the right place to post, sorry if its not!

Untill a few weeks ago I had never even heard of celiac disease, or even knew people had wheat allergies, or what gluten was lol. My aunt and cousins, who live in another state do not eat wheat or gluton, I just thought it was because it was suposed to be healthy or somehting. Well i was just there visiting for the first time, and me and my sister began talking to her about all these problems iv been having. She sugested maybe i should stop eating wheat/ gluton. So when I came home I started to try to research this....and when I saw all the symptoms for celiac I thought omgosh i think i might really have this.

Right now i am 19, almost 20 years old. Since I was about 5 years old I remember always have a stomache ache, and either not being able to go to the bathroom, or haveing diarrhea. My mom took me to the doctor a few times, and they insisted nothing was wrong and i was possibly just trying to get attention. Well from then on my mom yelled at me just about every day when i said my stomache hurts and i feel sick...and lets not even mention how the school nurse treated me.

So after elementary school i pretty much learned to just deal with it and not even mention it. All through middle and high school it was ok, not too bad but i still had the stomache aches all the time, every day. Along with those i got frequent headaches. I also have always had many many cavities though i brush my teeth about 5 times a day, never drink soda, and im not a candy person..and i hate the dentist lol! I even had to get these nasty coating stuff on my teeth when i was younger becuse i just kept getting cavities. I have always tryed really hard to concentrate in school, and take notes, but whenever im in class, no matter how hard i try, i cant stay focused on anything for more than 10 or 15 min, if that. its really upsetting and my parents just think and have always thought i just dont care, which is not true at all.

I really dont want to make this too long so ill try to shorten everything....So my biggest problems have always been the constant stomache aches, cant concentrate, cavities, constipation alternated with diarrhea, bloated, nautious, headaches, very much anxiety for no reason, very irratable when i dont know why or want to be, i just cant help it!. ......but now in the past year all of these have gotten much worse and theres new symptoms too....my headaches have turned into migrains. I'm very light headed all the time. For the past 8 months i have had constant loud ringing in the ears ( and by constant i mean it started 8 months ago and i have it from going to sleep to waking up!!!!) I have joint pain, tingling in my hands and feet along with badddd cramps in my legs. I'v been getting canker sores, like 3 at a time. This past year iv had more colds and been sick more than all of highschool. I have had vision problems that nowone can explain( always seeing moving dots, flashes, light blobs)... and to top it all off i am so tired some days i literaly cant get myself out of bed to barely eat.

Now ofcourse i have gone to the doctor about these but have never made too much of an issue about it, not wanting to seem like a hypochondriac that is. The doctor just says , oh its probly a bug. Oh its probly another bug. oh eat more fiber. well maybe you have IBS. And I have been to 5 doctors about my ear ringing, two ear/nose/throat doctors, two dentists, and my regular doctor ofcourse. They cant find anything wrong with my ears or hearing in any way. Exept for inflimation in my jaw joint. Iv also been to 3 eye doctors who all say ,my eyes are very healthy and cant explain the problems.

I have an appointment with my doctor next week, and I am going to bring all this up. I am just worried she will dismiss me, or tell me to get off the wheat and gluten free diet i have been on the past two weeks. I just want to feel normal for once in my life and i hope this is it. Though iv been on this diet about two weeks i feel the same if not a little worse. Im not sure if maybe my body is just getting used to it? and im not sure, i mean all my symptoms could just be other things, just nowone has ever said anything but its all in my head :(

First off, it is not all in your head. I had to reply because your story is SO similar to mine. I've suffered my entire life and everyone thought I was trying to get attention and needed anti-depressants. After spending a lot of money on doctors, naturopaths, herbs, everything.. finally a doctor listened to me. I have celiac, a pituitary tumor, kallmans syndrome, osteopenia, RA.. and I am only 24. I am going back to the GI doctor in a few weeks to get some more tests done, the dr thinks I may have an enzyme deficiency as well. It has been a process, let me tell you! I would def suggest getting a FULL thyroid panel done, not just your tsh. Do any autoimmune diseases run in your family? I have a very strong family history. You sound like you have a lot of hyperthyroid symptoms, which is what I had to begin with. But you need to find a GOOD doctor who listens. It is tough. Where do you live? I am part of a thyroid network, maybe I could help. I know what is like to have so many symptoms and be so frustrated because you dont know what it is! Take care, keep us updated.

thank you for responding=] I know anemia runs in my family as well as thalassemia(a form of anemia, a genetic blood disorder). I live in upstate newyork, my doctor i generaly see is very nice and i think she will listen to me. There just arent very many good doctors where i live lol. I think i have heard someone in my family talk about thyroid problems before but honestly i am not even sure what that means lol. could you tell me what the full thyroid panel means? is it just bloodwork? , and also what is tsh? sorry for all the questions! oh and i also have to ask....do you have the ear ringing problem too??

When you see your doc. ask for the blood work and an endoscopie. My blood work came back as negative, but my G.I. doc. refused to give up and did the scope. I've been gluten-free since March 7th of this year.

Thalassemia runs in my family as well. TSH is the thyroid stimulating hormone. Many doctors only look at this to diagnose thyroid disorders. However, many people have other "issues" with their thyroid and t3/t4, thyroid anti-bodies, etc all need to be tested. My tsh is fine, but I have a pituitary tumor. I did have ringing in my ears, I thought I was nuts. So, a full thyroid panel includes all aspects of your thyroid. adrenals should be tested too.. it seems many people have to wait a long time to find the correct diagnosis. Probably because any sort of autoimmune diseases has many, many symptoms that all intertwine with one another. I hope you find out what it is!

First off, it is not all in your head. I had to reply because your story is SO similar to mine. I've suffered my entire life and everyone thought I was trying to get attention and needed anti-depressants. Will come back to fully read, edit my post and reply to op. At my age 17, everyone also think it's all in my head and I just want attention. Also no doctor is really paying attention, and now it left a feeling on me that I now need to leave this city for college and never return. My health....

People always think it is in your head, especially if you are a female. My problems started at 17, I am now 24 and JUST am starting to receive diagnosis. I was confirmed a celiac and pituitary tumor 1 month ago, but still have "issues" in other areas; my body is in menopause. Many doctors told me I was lucky to not have a period. I really do understand your frustrations.

Thanks, yeah it's really frustrating. I have my doctor who is just looking at anxiety, and family who all seem to think the doctor is right and bla...... I really think it's devastating that you had to wait until 24 to get a diagnosis, and thats just something I wouldn't be able to do, how miserable. Do you now steps that were taken for your doctor to pay attention or become alerted? I have almost every symptom in the book for diabetes, celiac, thyroid, and monosodium glutamatate intolerance. Who would want to start senior year in this situation.

To op

I have experience ringing noise, though it went away as I became gluten free... a lot of symptoms seem to have settled or became a little less present as I became gluten free. Though since I went on a 2 week diet before I got a celiac test, it came back false. Leaving me at the stage on whether to eat gluten again or not. I'm deciding not to, I know I did not see improvements for no reason... I'm sure it was the diet. Though other testing that I should be having done may not be likely, since my results say differently. Though I will suggest that I should get a thyroid test, along with diabetes, and yeast and monosodium glutamate allergy. I know I do have a health problem, not mental. If you can not afford the testing ordered by your doctor, then you can go on a gluten free diet and within 2 weeks make observations.

*Wasnt able to fully reply as I would have liked since I'm most recently confused about how majors of social sciences will benefit/ harm.

Hi there,

I'm a 30 year old woman who has had Hashimotos Thyroid Disease since the age of 14. In January I started having severe diaherra, constipation, ringing in my ear, joint pain muscle pain, headaches, abdominal pain, dizziness, eye floaters, blurred vision, loss of appetite, neck pain, back pain (lower and upper pain), anxiety, depression, and believe me the list still goes on. I went to several docs who told me nothing was wrong with me and I needed to be put on anti-deppresants and see a psychologist. I didn't believe the doctor and kept going to different docs who told me the same thing Finally I was referred to a Rheumotoloist, who also didn't think there was anything wrong, but ordered a lot of blood tests. They found I had a SEVERE vitamin D deficiency. I have been on precription Vitmain D for 3 months now and although I do feel better I still notice some minor pains throughout my body. You should ask for a complete vitamin panel done to check all of your levels. Believe me an imbalance in your vitamins can cause alot of havoc on your body.

Good luck I hope you feel better soon!!!

TIFF :D

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.

Seven months can still be early in celiac healing, especially if you were mostly asymptomatic to begin with—symptoms like low iron, vitamin D deficiency, nail changes, and hair issues often take much longer to improve because the gut needs time to recover before absorption normalizes. A tTG-IgA of 69 is not “low” in terms of immune activity, and it can take 12–24 months (sometimes longer) for antibodies and the intestinal lining to fully heal, particularly in teens and young adults. Eating gluten again to “test” things isn’t recommended and won’t give you clear answers—it’s far more likely to cause harm than clarity. Weight not changing is also very common in celiac and doesn’t rule anything out. Please know that your frustration and sadness matter; this adjustment is hard, and feeling stuck can really affect mental health. You deserve support, and if you can, reaching out to a GI dietitian or mental health professional familiar with chronic illness could really help you through this phase. This study indicates that a majority of celiacs don't recover until 5 years after diagnosis and starting a gluten-free diet: Mucosal recovery and mortality in adults with celiac disease after treatment with a gluten-free diet However, it's also possible that what the study really shows is the difficulty in maintaining a 100% gluten-free diet. I suspect that if you looked closely at the diets of those who did not recover within 2 years might be that their diets were not 100% gluten-free. Perhaps they ate out more often, or didn't understand all of the hidden ingredients where gluten can hide. Either way, it shows how difficult recovery from celiac disease can be for most people. According to this study: This article explores other causes of flattened villi:
