Views On Camera Pill Endoscopy

Hello, All

My bloodword tested positive for Celiac about three weeks ago. I had an upper endoscopy last week, and right after the procedure my doctor reported that she saw "blunted" and "less prominent" villi. I went for a follow up today for the official results of the biopsy she took of my duodenum and she now says that the pathologist or whoever reads the biopsy reported that there was not enough damage or evidence to officially diagnose Celiac. So now the doctor says because of my symptoms and dramatic weight loss, and because you can't get a thorough view of the small intestines by an upper endoscopy, she wants to do a full small intestine endoscopy by way of a pill. She says that the camera magnifies everything eight times large and that this will indefinitely tell her if I'm celiac or not.

Has anybody even been diagnosed this way? At this point, I'm ready to just go by the blood test and forget everything else!

Sometimes I feel like we're lab rats!

You DO have a diagnosis with positive blood work and you were lucky enough to catch your Celiac before more severe damage could occur. Biopsies can be very unreliable and miss effected areas.

Yes, the pill cam is one of the most useful tools to diagnose because it can offer a full view of the entire intestinal track.

You can continue to test, or begin the diet and look forward to recovery. ;)

My doc wanted to bypass the whole endoscopy and just do the pill cam, as he says it is much more reliable and a complete picture can actually be seen, whereas with an endoscopy, it can be hit or miss. From what it sounded like, insurance doesn't cover the pill cam until an EGD has first been done to warrant further examination...

For you, it just depends on how much longer it will prolong the process. Sounds like celiac will be the outcome either way.

Thanks! This makes me feel better! I told myself after today's followup that maybe it's all in my head!

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
