Hello All,

I am new to the gluten-free/CF lifestyle...since Aug 5 of this year. I am feeling really good. However, I will be attending a wedding next month and am not quite sure how to handle it. The reception is at a large banquet facility so Im sure everyone will be having the same dinner. Do I just eat before I go? Calling the bride is not an option. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have called the hall directly. It has never been an issue. The host is not charged for any type of "special" meal. They do not have any additional concerns or stress for their special day. Do this in advance (when the invitation has arrived and before you RSVP) Call again the day of the event to remind the staff and get your contact name for your serving staff. As soon as you get to the event, make a visit to your contact person and identify yourself for the servers. (This is another way to remind the kitchen so your meal can be at the same time as the rest of the guests.)

If the staff seems ignorant of the diet, I would not eat anything at the event.

Have a great time!

I totally agree. If you don't get satisfactory answers when you call the facility, don't eat there. If they seem knowledgeable but aren't sure they CAN accommodate you, you might ask them about whether they could prepare a salad for you or something. If they don't know what you're talking about, I wouldn't even trust them to prepare a salad without contaminating it.

You can eat before you go, and maybe stick a little trail mix or something discreet in your purse in case you are just starving.

Power bars work to keep in your bag to nibble on too. If you ask the caterer for a fruit plate or large salad dressing on the side will keep everyone happy.

Have a great time1

I just wrote the below email to a catering company for a friend's wedding:

"Hello,

I will be a guest at the *last names* wedding on October 10th, 2009. I have Celiac Disease and am hoping you will be able to accommodate a gluten-free meal that I can eat safely with the other guests. I don't want to stress out the bride & groom with additional details or cost the bride & groom anything extra for my meal and am hoping you are able to help me. Is your staff familiar with severe food allergies/dietary restrictions and able to provide a meal free of gluten and safe from cross-contamination?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Jillian *last name*"

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
