Fell Off The Weight Loss Wagon

Back in September I decided to loose some needed weight. My parents actually got me excited about it. I started the South Beach diet and by six weeks I had lost 13 pounds. I didn't cheet and was really proud of myself. We had our halloween party and that was the first I had strayed from my diet (no I'm not cheeting with gluten at all!). It went down hill from there. I fell of the proverbial wagon, and have gained about two pounds back. I really want to get back on tract, but having a hard time of it with the holidays. I think on some level I was remembering back a year ago when I got my biopsy results. It was right before halloween that I started the diet. I find it hard not to enjoy all the gluten free goodies when they are around. Even when the kids and husband are enjoying their "gluten filled" treats, I find it hard to resist mine. I guess I didn't want left out. It would be easier to not eat so many goodies if my husband would go along with me. He could stand to loose a few pounds himself, but does not want to. I've got to get back it my original mindset and just DO IT! ;) Any advice?

I just started weight watchers last week, right before the holidays which some think is stupid. Dont beat yourself up about "falling off the wagon", everyone does. Each day is a new day to try it again. Getting rid of gluten was a process and so is weight loss. Just try to make the best decisions you can when it comes to food. Think to yourself, "is that worth it?", thats what I do. I had an old friend come up to visit me this weekend for the night (I am Gluten free and just started Weight Watchers) and she brought a burrito to my house and then asked me to stop and get McDonalds the next day!!! To me, so NOT worth it. But then about a day later my boyfriend had a Godiva chocolate in his Freezer. I checked the gluten and the points value and.....SO WORTH IT!

Good luck to you!

Sometimes an accountability buddy can help. My best friend and I were not accountability partners per se, but she lost 80 lbs. over the least two years, and has been eating a lot healthier...so it just was normal for me to do it, too. I also journal my food (even more so now with the gluten issue and other intolerances, to keep up with anything that could be bothering me) and it's the ol' move more and eat less. But I'm with many who say they are hungry all the time - I could eat the house...but so far, so good. Hang in there, and Smithk6 is right: don't beat yourself up. You are human like the rest of us. Decide to make a small change tomorrow, and you'll get there over time.

I have been trying to be more consciencious about how much I am eating. I will really get back on track after Christmas. The kids want sugar cookies and a few other things, and right now I just want to have some. I feel confident that I will get back into the swing of things soon. Thanks for the thoughts.

Roda - you'll get there! And believe me - have cookies! That is the fun of the holidays. I scrimp on a meal here or there, and gorge on the good stuff. Ok, bad for me stuff, but awfully yummy. :)

Have a good holiday - and enjoy it without guilt.

Good advice here.

As the others said, it's OK to have treats from time to time. Just make it a "one off" and then return to your fat loss plan. People run into trouble when 1 cookie turns into 1 bag of cookies, and then a week of crazy eating. Also, giving yourself 1 or 2 planned meals a week where you relax and have a "treat meal" can really help with long term compliance-knowing you have a treat coming up can make it easier to stick to your plan.

I am back on track now going into week two. My husband also got me an early birthday present of ea sports active for the wii. I have been doing this almost every day. It will really get you going if you have not been doing to much exercise like me. I really like it and it is fun and I don't think I will get bored with it any time soon. I can already tell a difference in my legs! I'm going to be the squat queen. I find myself wanting to exercise. Up until a few months ago I was pretty much exercise intolerent. I attribute it to having chronic low ferritin for so long. It is improving and I find that I don't get tachycardic and short of breath from doing normal activities now. I feel the best I have felt in almost 4 years. The exercise is making me feel good too. I am confident that the combination of eating and exercise will work. When the weather gets warmer I'll be ready to ride my bike! :) Thanks everyone for the support!

Will power can be a problem with me also. I can make some pretty good things gluten free. I don't miss the old stuff at all. I have not been baking much at all, just trying to have healthy options in the house. I still slip once and a while, but we are all after all just human. I'm keeping up with exercising. I just had to take a 6 day break from it because of ankle pain and swelling. I got really upset because now that I am able to tolerate this something got in the way. The rest is exactly what my ankles needed though. I have been back at it now two days in a row with no problems. I am wrapping them before I exercise and it helps restrict my movements so they don't twist. I was told a few years ago I had weak ligaments. I did notice I did not sleep as well during my "off time". The exercise really helped with sleep. Good luck with the weight loss. I found the south beach way of eating to make alot of sense. I initally lost 13 lbs in phase one. Now with exercising I'm not loosing as fast, but I am gaining muscle. I can tell things are firming up. My almost 9 year old son commented the other day saying "the exercise must be working mom, your legs and butt are not as giggly." Oh what comes from the mouths of babes! :o

Since 2015 we've spent extensive time in Italy and I've been able to eat their wheat products without incident. Initially, I was practically starving thinking foods in Sicily were not gluten-free.  An Italian friend who had lived in the US for over 20 years said she had celiac/gluten-free friends from the US who could eat Italian wheat products without problems. Hesitantly, I tried little by little without issues.  A few years later at a market, I asked a bread vendor if they had gluten-free loaves. Turns out she had lived in LA, said groups believe it's not the gluten that's causing our bodies harm, but potassium bromate; these groups have been trying to ban it.  Bromines and other halogens wreaks havoc to our endocrine system and, more specifically, our thyroids and immune systems. When bromines are ingested/absorbed into the body, it displaces iodine causing other health issues. Potassium bromate is a powerful oxidizing agent (dough 'conditioner') that chemically changes flour to enhance elasticity, bleaches the dough, and ages the flour much faster than open air.   Shortly thereafter while visiting friends in California, one family said they had gone gluten-free and the difference was incredible. The reason they choose this path was due them (a biologist/chemist/agriculturist scientist) having to write a portion of a paper about a certain product for the company he worked. Another company's scientist was directed to write the other portion. All was confidential, they weren't allowed to know the other company/employee.  After the research, they learned gluten was being removed from wheat, sent elsewhere, returned in large congealed blocks resembling tofu, and then added to wheat products. Potassium bromate has been banned for use in Europe, China, and other countries, but not in the US. Then we have the issues of shelf preservatives and stabilizers. What are we eating?  Why? We spend long periods of time in Italy and all has been good.  We just returned from an extended time in Greece;  no issues there either.  There is a man there we learned about on a travel show about Greece who walks the hills, picking herbs, pods, etc.  He is a very learned scholar, taught at the university level in Melbourne. It took a few days to locate him, but were finally successful. He too, is concerned about the additives and preservatives in American food (many of his customers are Americans, haven't been in the best of health, and have become healthier after visiting him). He suggested taking a food product from the US and the same product in Europe, and compare the different ingredients. Then ask why these things are being allowed in the US by the 'watch dog' of our foods and drugs. It would be amuzing if it weren't tragic. I'm presently looking for flour from Europe that I can make my own bread and pasta as the gluten-free bread is now $7.99 a (small) loaf.  BTW, studies are showing that many gluten-free individuals are becoming diabetic. My guess is because the gluten-free products are high in carbs. This is only my experience and opinion garnished by my personal research.  I hope it helps.

Symptoms that get worse if you don't supplement is a sign of malabsorption, possibly due to Celiac disease. Blood tests for nutritional deficiencies are not very accurate, and should be done when you have been off of supplements for eight to twelve weeks, otherwise the vitamin supplements you've taken will be measured.  The blood circulation system is a transportation system.  It transports the vitamins you've absorbed around the body, but blood tests don't give an accurate picture of the vitamin and mineral stores inside organs and tissues where they are actually used.  You can have "normal" blood levels but still have deficiencies.  This is because the brain demands stored nutrients be put into the blood stream to supply important organs, like the brain and heart, while other organs do without.   If you are taking Thiamine Mononitrate in your supplements, you are probably low in thiamine.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many supplements because it won't break down sitting on a shelf.  This also means Thiamine Mononitrate is difficult for the body to utilize.  Only thirty percent of Thiamine Mononitrate on the label is absorbed and even less is able to be utilized by the body.  A different form of Thiamine called Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.   Talk to your doctor about doing a genetic test to look for Celiac markers.   I'm concerned that if you do a gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum off two weeks) in your weakened state, the nutritional deficiencies will become worse and possibly life threatening.

Hello, good afternoon!   I apologize, I didn’t see a notification and I’m just reading this. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and the link. Yes you are absolutely right, even so trying to get a response from them has been extremely difficult. They don’t answer but I will your practice of “guilty until proven innocent.”   I like and have a sense of trust here in this website, everyone is honest and thoughts are raw. The mutual understanding is amazing!   thank you Scott!

I'd go with a vodka tonic, but that's just me😉

That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.
